My name is Aspra Laira.
If it so please the Squirrel King of Arms, I request the assistance of the College in designing and obtaining arms for myself and my lawful heirs.
My favorite color is red.
Here's my proposed design:
Vert, a hand proper, couped at the wrist holding a rose stalked, on a chief engrailed gules, a roundel between two crescents argent, horns outward.
Behind the symbolism: Green is for my Irish heritage; the hand holding a rose comes from my maiden and middle names; the moons are for the influence of cycles in my life, and the engrailed line (which could easily be wavy) is for the ocean -- my love of travel.
As to whether my husband's design and mine will be conjoined, I leave that up to the wisdom of the Squirrel King of Arms. We both realize that the process of obtaining arms is not one to be rushed, so we will both wait patiently. I just wanted to place my request because I was enjoying the design process so much.

Begging the pardon of the Squirrel King, I have taken the liberty of creating a draft emblazon as requested by the petitioner, and append it below. To avoid violation of the tincture rule, I have chosen to render the rose argent. Columcille Pursuivant

Lord Hooligan,
I'm quite impressed. It is just what I imagined. The rose argent against the green looks wonderful -- better than gules. Thank you for your skills!
If it matters to the Squirrel King, I like this design a lot!

Begging the pardon of the Squirrel King, I have taken the liberty of creating a draft emblazon as requested by the petitioner, and append it below. No need to beg. Thank you for your rapid attention to this petitioner. To avoid violation of the tincture rule, I have chosen to render the rose argent. The rose Argent is a wise decision, but the slipped and stemmed Vert on Vert is a concern for contrast. I'm also concerned about the chief Gules on the field Vert (and it makes my mild but ever-present Deuteranomaly go crazy). What blazon has this? -- Jaune Sabre Herald, Squirrel King at Arms

In the spirit of enquiry only:
As an amateur, and speaking in layman's terms, would some sort of wavy silver bar between the red and green fields, and a fully silver rose, solve some of the issues?

It would, but that might push the design over the complexity limit. Useful gratuitous heraldry term: fimbriation. When you use a thin border to avoid having metal or metal or colour on colour, the border is called a fimbriation. For example, Breneir's arms have a mullet gules (red star, which I just typed as "gullet mules") on a field vert (green). To prevent a tincture rule violation, the star is fimbriated argent (silver, or white). So what you are asking about is fimbriating the chief to provide contrast with the field.

I see, yes - so if there were a metal fimbriation, that would deal with the contrast - is making the rose fully argent a problem, then?
I make the complexity 7 different items (8 if the moons are separate) with the fimbriation.

Making the rose fully argent would certainly improve the contrast. I'm frankly not sure how to count the complexity of this design. I'll let the Squirrel King rule on that.

I make the complexity 7 different items (8 if the moons are separate) with the fimbriation. Yes, the moons are separate. Technically, the ( moon is "decrescent", and the ) moon is "increscent". And of course, heraldry is based on technicalities such as these! ;D -- Jaune Sabre Herald, Squirrel King at Arms

What if we don't have the rose stalked, but instead it would be in an open hand, just the bud? Then the green leaves would have contrast with the hand proper.
As for the chief gules, I have no particular reason to make it gules. It could be any color, and I'd be happy. Maybe the moons could be gules, the chief argent? I can picture that in my mind, and it looks great. (Reminds me a bit of my brother's actually.) Maybe someone else can design it based on these new ideas?

What if we don't have the rose stalked, but instead it would be in an open hand, just the bud? Then the green leaves would have contrast with the hand proper. So the hand is holding a bud? We'll need to be careful with contrast. You could have a red rose (gules) on an open hand proper, but a white rose (argent) would not have enough contrast. The hand would need to be larger to avoid getting covered. You probably will want the open rose, as a rosebud is hard to tell from a heraldic tulip. Similar to Lord Hooligan's but differenced - that's okay (unless he wants to protest, which WOULD give us reason to formally establish our Court of Chivalry). The weekend will be a good time for more doodling. I'll try to roust out that Collumcille Pursuivant. Stand by. -- Jaune Sabre Herald, Squirrel King at Arms

S:r Betiñéir,
When I said "bud" I really meant open rose without a stalk (like you pointed out). I think it would look best gules on the open hand, like you said. The hand would also look better bigger (good point). The hand would not be clenching the stalkless flower, but instead holding it in an open hand. Also the hand would not come from the right side, but from the bottom. Make sense? I think we are on the same page. Thank you!

Is this the page we are on? Vert a dexter hand argent throughout maintaining a rose gules barbed and seeded vert on a chief engrailed argent a torteau between an increscent and a decrescent gules. I'm jealous that this petitioner would be getting the torteau that I wanted between the cross and chalice in chief on my own arms. Anyone who has driven west approaching 4th Street on Grand Avenue in our shared hometown would know why I wanted the torteau to complete my design. The rules ("slot machine violation") forbade it in my case, but the crescents allow Aspra to mix in the torteau. Columcille
