Apparently, it was heart disease and not a bumpy plane ride.

It's funny how a person's entire life can be hidden behind a single impression. It does seem that he was a rather nice dude, and yet he's widely known as a loud-mouth hawker of questionable products. Show business is tough! Same things with MJ -- we're now seeing much about his very talented career, but the last ten years or so have sure taken front stage in defining how folks have felt about him.

have you seen the reality show? Wow... I though he was nice in interviews and very real, but that showed another side of him, not sure how much was "real" though!

It's great.
Today, the Discovery Channel is having a marathon of the shoe "Pitchmen". You see a side of Mr Mays that (for me) really humanizes the person.
Yes, he was Pitchman for products - but the show goes behind the scenes to show how and why they select the product. It's pretty eye-opening what a product has to go through, to make it to a commercial
Also, it show Mr. Mays being a very charitable guy - Doing commercials for charities, helping out friends getting back on their feet, etc.
I recommend even a brief look at the show for everyone - if nothing else to show how what we see isn't always what is going on.

Mr. Mays definitely had a flair. From my own viewings of "Pitchmen", I found him to be a very nice, mild-mannered and truly sympathetic and kind man, but boy as soon as those cameras went on, he was -- well, he was a "Pitchman". Even his co-star on the show Anthony Sullivan couldn't believe how extremely loud he became on-air. He seemed to be a very fine man who did a very fine job in the profession he loved, helped carve, and that suited him best. May he rest in peace.

As someone who sells stuff (not like Billy Mays, however), I can definitely appreciate the art of pitching that Billy Mays had so mastered. He and Vince (the Sham-wow guy) were good. When I first saw Billy Mays's OxiClean commercial, I felt compelled to buy it (and glad I did, it's good stuff). And to Vince's credit, I have the sham-wow and the slap-chop.
But aside from his professional success, I think seeing him on Pitchmen really put a human face to him and he stopped being just "the guy with the beard who yells about removing stains." June has truly been a month of loss.
