Both homegrown Talossans and members of the Talossan diaspora understand the benefits of freedom and liberty and so it was with cautious hope that we watched the elections unfold in Iran. On social platforms across the internet and in public squares and in gathering halls there seemed to be a feverish pitch forward on the path toward democracy as millions assembled to voice their support for their particular candidate. Mir Hussein Mousavi, a former Prime Minister and a prominent member of the cadre of the Islamic Revolution's founding father--Ayatollah Khoemini--has found himself and his insurgent opposition to the regime of Ayatollah Khamenei the new symbol of the Iranian people's indefatigable determination to shake off the yoke of oppression and join the community of nations as a peaceful and prosperous partner.
But Election Day has come and gone and over the course of ten days it has now become clear that the regime of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and "former President" Mahmoud Ahmadinejad which claims control of the nation and which refuses public accountability through free and fair elections is prepared to commit grave crimes against its own people in order to retain its hold on the nation. These include murder and intimidation as the actions of the basij and Iranian military forces clearly illustrate, shuttering of the press and other communications platforms including Western media and sites such as Twitter, restrictions on the free movement of its citizens as Khamanei's sermon last Friday denying permits for protestors to mass at Freedom Square today, and the issuance of baseless accusations against Western and International authorities such as those being reported by the BBC and Al-Jazeera. Over the course of ten days, millions of Iranians from across the economic, religious, social and political spectrum have appeared and united all across the globe with peace-loving and freedom-loving peoples to come out into the streets to demand a government of their choosing free of the arbitrary whims of a dictatorship and accountable to their sentiments and will. Over the course of ten days, a proud people have refused to "shirk from the burden of duty put on their shoulders by the destiny of generations and ages." as Mousavi eloquently stated the challenge.
The Progressive Party of Talossa proudly declares its solidarity with the millions of Iranians who now comprise the Green Revolution and that are now claiming their natural rights to self-determination and an open and free society. The Progressive Party condemns the actions of the Khamenei regime as a violation of basic human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and in international agreements of which Iran is a signatory such as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
The second revolution in Iran has begun and the Progressive Party and its members proudly proclaim that we stand with them every step of the way and hopes that all other citizens, political parties and organizations join with us in this affirmation.
Long live a free Iranian people! Long live the Green Revolution!
