With the election of a new provincial assembly approaching in a week, I think it would be a fine time to lay out some of my ideas for the upcoming provincial term. I hope that some of these will be considered by the new assemblymen, and perhaps even enacted.
Constitution of Maritiimi-Maxhestic
We must enact a provincial constitution laying out the framework for the province and the manner in which it shall be run, within the consigns of Organic and statutory law. This should be our most solemn and important duty. If anyone would like to make a draft or suggestions, that would be welcome, otherwise it would seem to be meet for the assembly to create a two-man commission to write it. I urge brevity and generality, and an eye for integrity of governance.
Establishment of an Oath of Office
It is due time for the seriousness of provincial activity to be addressed, as we emerge into a bright new future. To this end, and with an eye towards stopping the slipshod vagrancy of previous provincial officials, some gravity should be imparted to the office of assemblyman, constable, and senator. It is my belief that the best first step would therefore be an oath of office for all those representing the citizens of Maritiimi-Maxhestic, establishing our priorities and what we demand from our democratic representatives. My suggestion would be thus:
"I solemnly swear that I will uphold the Organic Law of the Kingdom of Talossa and the Constitution of the province of Maritiimi-Maxhestic to the best of my ability, with promptness and justice, and that I take this obligation freely, and will faithfully discharge the duties of my office."
Confirmation of Symbols
Other provinces have decided they want to change their flags, names, and so on. I believe we are happy with our proud banner, which is so boldly complex as to drive any potential usurper insane from the get-go (no one's going to be able to copy US!), and similarly with our name. We should enact a state statute to this effect, declaring our confidence in these things. I am not much for showy meaningless legislation (despite all evidence to the contrary), but this is important.
Appointment of Scribe
While I redid the provincial page and have maintained it to a degree, an active province merits someone appointed to care for it. I leave it up to the assembly to decide whether or not they wish to make this the duty of the assembly's head (or for him to delegate) or appoint someone else specifically.
I believe these are all worthwhile actions for an active provincial assembly, as I hope we shall have. We walk into the future, joined by our fellow provinces... let us set the example for them, as has been our recent wont. Forward, Maritiimi-Maxhestic!
