Some of you know, and some of you don't. I finally graduated last December with a degree in Music Education and I got my license in the mail this week. I am now licensed to teach in Kansas! I am currently substitute teaching in the local district, and I've had a good time so far. I'm also looking for a "regular" job that starts in August. I've again joined the "real world," this time doing something I really enjoy. The last gig was computer tech support, and although the pay was decent the atmosphere was terrible. This time it's the opposite.

Welcome to the family. I've been a teacher for 30 years now but I can say that, apart from a few disgusting students I've had and a few disgusting times I've been through, teaching is really one of the most beautiful things you can do in life.
Congratulations!

Congrats as well! If you can survive Talossa the kids will be a snap! Carry the Kingdoms brochures to class. Best wishes from a family of teachers.

I'm sure you'll be a bog hit with the kids when you tell them your name is QUEER DEAR CALIGULA! ;D Not to rain on anyone's parade...but reality check time. I subbed for 4.5 years, even taught summer school. Never even had a single interview for a full-time teaching job. Of course, I am a white male (strike one and two) and a history major (strike three!). But it may be different for someone else in a different field, diff. state, diff. everything, I'm sure. Subbing is also no picnic, I assure you. The kids "test" subs (as I'm sure you can remember from any time you had a sub when you were in high school); it's only worse now since kids/teens are basically pretty evil little bastards...much more so than ever before. I basically had to be really rigid and humorless and severe to get them to listen and behave and accomplish whatever tasks the missing teach had laid out for them that day. Unless I wanted to be really lazy, then they'd just do nothing. Normally, I wanted to show the missing teacher that the sub they had enforced the rules. This was ok but didn't make for a pleasant day, usually. It didn't take me long to figure out that the teaching job just wasn't going to happen, and by that point, I didn't really care anymore. Frankly, it was Columbine that was a huge eye-opener for me. Really showed how, even the "good" (ie, not minority dominated) schools had misfits and homicidal maniacs in the making. Unless there were armed police guards and they allowed teachers to use physical violence against these punk asshole teenagers, there's no way you could pay me enough to teach. Oh, and good luck QC!

Congratulations, Q. C. Hopefully you will have a better time of it than i.m. appeared to have. I'm into my 29th year of teaching. The plus side is far ahead of the minus side. I have been fortunate. I teach an unusual subject though, human gross anatomy. I've been in and out of hundreds of cadavers over the years. I hope you have a regular job for the next school year.

I teach an unusual subject though, human gross anatomy. Yeah, anatomy is pretty gross. When my wife (then-girlfriend) took that class she'd always come home smelling like formaldehyde. Not the most most pleasant thing.

In an large urban school system, that would be a disadvantage. Especially in history/social studies, since that subject is unofficially reserved for coaches. At least it is here. I am at an advantage wanting to teach music in a smaller (150-400) school. I've been able to handle it fairly well during student-teaching as well as now, and believe me, I dealt with it nearly every day. I've only had one student so far tell me to stuff myself, and getting another teacher involved pretty much took care of that. Thanks.
