Azul, everybody!
I'll hopefully have time later to do a Stot article about all this, but here's what I have for now:
I had a three hour phone conversation with Maxime last night (mostly at his expense, he seemed quite eager to tell his story).
From what he told me:
1. He has not applied for citizenship in the quitters group; merely for membership in their discussion board. How he chooses to curry favour with that group is his own business. He was unable to post to Wittenberg for unknown reasons; perhaps an account automatically goes dead after a certain period of inactivity. I don't know.
2. He has renounced his citizenship in BOTH groups in order to be a sort of neutral broker between us. His ultimate aim is to bring about some sort of reconciliation.
3. He is fed up with the bickering and blames the whole division on Chris Gruber's unquenchable lust for power. He blames the whole "Halloween Crisis" on that, and points out incredulously that one reason for it was Gruber's insistence with the PC that he become Prime Minister. Mind you, this was before he mocked my mother's death and called for my own death. If Gruber had told
us that he wanted to be PM instead of taking the Cort seat he was offered (you can't be both PM and a Cort justice, of course), then probably he would have been made PM and there would have been no crisis. Instead, he told the PC he wanted to be PM, and he told the MN he wanted to be a Cort Justice. Both sides gave him what he wanted. He chose to be an asshole anyway because Gruber and Furxheir decided in 2003 to set up the fake site and kick the large majority of Talossans out.
4. He tells me that the thing that keeps the quitters together is the story, told repeatedly by Ragsdale, Furxheir, and Gruber, that I routinely hire "private investigators" to snoop into the backgrounds of any and all Talossans. As everybody with a brain knows, there is not one single shred of truth to the story. But it's a great story, because trying to disprove it is like trying to disprove the existence of God, or UFOs. You can't prove a negative. So it's a lie they can go on telling and re-telling, and there really isn't anything anybody can do about it. (As my dad put it, "Ben, how could you afford it?"
5. He says his ultimate goal is to reunite Talossa under a republican form of government with an elected head of state. This, of course, is completely in keeping with my own views, as I have been trying to abdicate for years and replace myself with an elective regency which would hold office on a regular basis for a completely powerless constitutional monarch. Plenty of room for compromise here. The MN is the majority party in Talossa and the MN supports my ultimate abdication. It's in their platform.
6. More possible room for compromise: He says there is a division between a less extreme faction under Michael Pope (the minority) and a more extreme faction under Gruber (the majority). As we have already amended our Organic Law to allow these people to return to Talossa, this may provide an opening.
7. He gave me a long discourse on his work with the Parti Québécois youth section, and how he finds 'real' politics much more personally fulfilling than Talossan politics. For that reason, he told me, he is giving the quitters six months to negotiate some sort of reconciliation with Talossa. Beyond six months, he will simply drop out of both communities.
So: What really happened? Ultimately, a lot of this boils down to the question of trust, and people who are trustworthy -- who don't go around telling different people different stories, or skulking around behind other people's backs, or stealing their identity or plagiarizing their copyrighted works -- are all still here.
That is one reason (of many) why Talossa is very much worth belonging to, especially now. I think everybody here wants some sort of reconciliation, and the restoration of our property and identity. Whether Maxime is the one to bring it about, who knows?
