I wanted to give another update on the situation in Burma. Apparently, government security forces are now hunting down dissidents in their homes and they are warning anyone who shows support for pro-democracy forces that they will be arrested. Both India and China refuse to do anything due to energy and other resource interests while Ban Ki-Moon (Secretary-General of the UN) has indicated that he will be requesting that the situation receive more attention from the Security Council. Finally, the US and the EU have tightened sanctions against the regime and Japan, a major humanitarian aid donor, has stated they are considering withdrawing some of the assistance in protest for the killing of a Japanese journalist at the height of protests.
Breneir out... Good night, and good luck

Also, hundreds of monks have been "disappeared" over the last few weeks.

It looks like October 6th is going to be an international day of protest and direct action against ongoing atrocities in Burma...that might be a good day for a resolution of support...

A lot of bloggers are going to fly a banner saying "Free Burma" on their websites, do you think we could do that on KOT.net?

I do not support legislation on this. As was pointed out in the "Yes this is Genocide" thread a long time ago, Talossa should focus on Talossan affairs, what benefit do we have a) putting a banner up or b) wasting talossan legislation on this? I'm sure we all feel for the situation and the monks all have our support and sympathy... But, as was pointed out with the Armenian legislation... it really would be pointless.

After some consideration, I must agree with Minister Toctvichteir. Talossa cannot condemn or praise every political action or crisis in the word. I note that we have not condemned the Sudanese actions in Darfur or the genocide in East Timor, and those resolutions to this effect we have passed have been forgotten very swiftly.

I disagree with you both. Talossa is not a nation that operates in a vacuum ignorant and aloof from world events. It is imperative that we proclaim to other nations (virtual, recognized or unrecognized) that we are a people that stand in solidarity with those that are struggling to realize their own dreams of self-determination.
Isolation and insularity disgusts me.

" They came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up. "
When, do we as Talossans, speak up?
While I understand before the Kingdom's reluctance to get involved in other countries internal affairs...
I wonder when, and if, we will ever add our voice to those that condemn man's inhumanity to man. We seem very reluctant to ever step on the toes of another country's polices. Unless it's the Republic's.
When do we say, enough is enough? Sure, it might not be prudent to condemn what happened a century ago. Or worthwhile.
But when do we , as a nation, stand up and tell the rest of the world "Hey! This is wrong! Stop it!"
When do we stop hiding in the alley, and walk up to the front of the crowd, and make a statement?
I know, that I will. And I am making a statement, as those of you that have a Facebook account know.
It's time. It's time to stand up, and say to the world that this is how we feel.

S:reu Davis, these pieces of legislation are wonderful statements by our Kingdom and it is apparent that you didn't forget about them. I thank you for that. Will you sponsor a resolution in support of the struggle for freedom in Burma should I author it?

In view of your fervent belief in this issue and my responsibility to represent you as your Senator, yes, I will. Since I am not opposed to it and see no true harm, I am bound by duty to oblige. Please email your proposal to me at ministerofstuff@kingdomoftalossa.net when it is ready; do not post it here. Thank you.

Ah, but my good friend Senator Davis -
Before, those were passed by an administration that was not ours. And a King, that no longer rules.
Let us not condemn the future, by our inaction's of the past.
We have a new King, a new administration, and a chance to make a new start.
You have pointed out 4 times the Kingdom made statements of protest. All 4 times, King Ben was the one that wrote the statements.
I am asking you , to change the way the Kingdom thinks, and the way the Kingdom approaches the world.
You , my friend- of all people... don't want to be shackled by the Kingdom's past. Stand in front, and make a new statement for the Kingdom.
