I would like to have a Talossan name. I see requests made on the general language board, but this seems like a good board for those kinds of requests. Correct me if I'm wrong.
My maiden name is Mollie Roselle Hand, but when I married, I dropped my middle name and took my maiden name as middle. Steinke is my last name. I like using Molroselle as my user name because I often mourn the loss of my middle name legally.
I know that Mollie comes from Mary, and the meaning in Hebrew is bitter. Bitter like the ocean, not bitter-angry. I always liked the connotation having to do with the ocean because I love to travel. Anyway, Roselle means little rose. Hand is an Irish surname whose meaning should be evident -- artist, craftsman, one who works with her hands. The meaning of Steinke is a mystery to me. It is a German name, but that is all I know.
I wouldn't mind simply being Mollie Roselle, but I would like to get some input as to the correct version of my name in Talossan.
I appreciate your help in this matter. Respectfully patient in this new year for my new name,
Mollie

Hm, well take my input with a grain of salt since I'm new here too. Mary directly translates to "Marïa." I looked for Molly/Mollie and there was nothing for that. Rose translates to "Rösa." Rösa is a feminine noun, so the adjective "little" is modified to "Pechéin." Smack those two together and you get " Marïa Pechéinrösa." Steinke is a diminutive form of the Middle German "stēn" so it would mean "little stone." www.answers.com/topic/steinkeIf you go this route you'd be " Marïa Pechéinpéira." I'd check with S:reu Siervicül, among others, in order to check if what I've found is correct and they probably have some to add to my findings. ~Vürinalt~

just as a note, in el glhetg, adjectives come after nouns. So it would be Rösapechein and Peirapechein

Note: I moved this thread from "Talossan Names" (which is a hidden special-purpose board) to here; this is where we generally discuss how to Talossify a name.
A little rose in Talossan would be a röseta. A little stone might be a peireta, but there are some other words you could use, too — for instance laira or petruschela.
So ... María Röseta Laira?

I wish to intrude rudely here.
My sister is named Mollie, not Mary, for a reason. By the time she was born, my Gramma Mary had had plenty of granddaughters named after her. My sisters and I have cousins named Mary Michelle, Mary Kathleen, Mary Kristeen, Mary Maureen, Mary Theresa, ...
My Gramma Mary made my father promise not to name another granddaughter Mary. And so his wish to honour his mother (Mary Rose Hand) was fulfilled with the naming of my youngest sister as Mollie Roselle instead.
Taking María would be an affront to the memory of my dear departed grandmother, and so I side with my sister that the interpretation of her name to bitter, and not to Mary, be honoured in her quest for a Talossan name.

Alright -- First name: After hearing the Seneschal's impassioned plea, I'm willing to depart from traditional practice and recommend a translation of bitter instead of the standard María. Bitter as in bitter-tasting would be Aspra. Middle: For Roselle, I agree with King John that Röseta is best. For Hand, that's la Mha (as previously adopted by the other Talossan la Mha). Last: King John has already raised the best possibilities here. Adding a diminutive suffix to a Talossan word for stone or rock gives peireta or cräpset. Alternatively, you could use one of the words meaning pebble, which is a small stone: laira or petruschela. I would suggest that you consult with Bob before deciding on which way to go for your surname, since he will be stuck with it too (if he ever wants to adopt a Talossan name).

Thanks for speaking on Grandma Mary's behalf, Hooligan. I like Aspra Röseta Laira. Laira rolls off the tongue nicely. I prefer it over peireta or cräpset. Of course, since that name belongs to Bob, I'll honor his choice for a translation, so I'll ask him to respond.
I'll be more traditional in Talossa, keeping my middle and losing my maiden name. If you all agree with that (Bob included), I'd like to begin using it.
Aspra Röseta Laira

On a side note, I'd suggest NOT using "cräpset"

Okay, every time I see my sister post, it reminds me of a nagging little thing that I'm sure only I care about, but well, I gave some Talossan ink (above) to my Gramma Mary, and my own internal sense of justice demands that I do the same honour to her husband, my "Dad Hand" (who Aspra, being ten years my junior, never had the chance to know).
I mean, it's not like anyone reading my post above would spend any time thinking, "wow; all those girl cousins named Mary...I wonder how many boy cousins he and Aspra have who are named after their dad's dad!" but hey, like I say, everytime I see Aspra post, I think, "I owe one to Dad Hand." So here, without anyone asking the question, is the answer:
None of our boy cousins are named after Dad Hand. This was by his own request, though. He made each of his five sons promise not to name any of their children after him. He was born Bernard Homer Hand but in honour of his brother Robert, who died in childhood, he dropped Bernard and added Robert, becoming Homer Robert. Dad Hand does have a son and a grandson (and, as you know, a Talossan grandson-in-law) named Robert, but he disliked the name Homer, and he always went by his initials, being known through life as H.R. Hand. My own dad, his siblings, and my Gramma Mary have all told me that in addition to honouring his lost brother, Dad Hand chose to become Homer Robert because he very much liked the rather regal monogram HRH, and was sometimes even referred to around the house by his wife and children, with their tongue in their cheek, as His Royal Highness.
There you go, Dad Hand.

Hey, he shoulda been a Talossan.

Wow, I'm glad I became a citizen of Talossa -- simply to find out about my heritage. I'd never heard that story about Dad Hand, Manus.
Truth told, we wanted to name our boy Homer. Both Bob and I liked the name, but I suppose if we had done that Dad Hand would have turned in his grave. The reason we opted for a different name was after we did an informal poll of our friends. They all laughed when we mentioned it. They said, "Don't do that to your son." Homer Simpson has pretty much ruined that name.
Turns out he was meant to be named Paul. There's a story behind that -- for another day.

Wait a minute! Now there are three "mha" dandelions?? You guys are just all over the place! Five, actually. In addition to the Hooliganites, Aspra and I will eventually need to request talossification of Adelaide, Paul, and Nora.
