From The London Gazette:
OBE for historical author Bernard Cornwell
Her Majesty The Queen has awarded Bernard Cornwell, noted author, an OBE. Officer, Order of the British Empire) in recognition of his contributions to literature and the furtherance of British culture abroad. Mr. Cornwell is an internationally renowned author of historical novels. Said Consul General John Rankin, “Bernard Cornwell’s works have not only entertained millions of readers but have also brought key aspects of history to modern-day audiences.”
Bernard Cornwell was born in London in 1944. He was raised in Essex, graduated from London University in 1966 and, after a brief spell as a teacher, joined BBC Television as a researcher in the Current Affairs division. He worked for the BBC for ten years, ending his career there as Head of Current Affairs Television in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
In 1979, his life changed when he fell in love with an Judy, an American who, for family reasons, could not live in the UK. In the US he couldn't get a green card, and for 18 months the only thing he could do was write. The result was his first book about 19th century hero, Richard Sharpe. His ‘Sharpe’ series of books have been entertaining readers since 1980 when the first installment, ‘Sharpe’s Eagle’, was published. Ever since, the series has showcased British exploits in the Napoleonic Wars to audiences around the world through the lens of Cornwell’s hero. The series was televised and, in the US, also ran on Masterpiece Theatre. His latest Sharpe book, the 11th, “Sharpe’s Fury,” is due to be published in September.
The Order of the British Empire was created in 1917 by King George V to reward World War I service by civilians at home and military persons in support positions. Today, the award is given to civilians and those in civil service for distinction in a variety of areas. Ranks include knights, commanders, officers, and members.
Mr. Cornwell will travel to London later this year to receive the honour from HM The Queen at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

In related news, the two co-founders of Wallace and Gromit production company Aardman Animations, Peter Lord and David Sproxton, are both made CBEs (Commander, Order of the British Empire).
