Brothers in Arms - Below please find a link to an article about a new book on church heraldry, "Manuale di araldica ecclesiastica" by Cardinal Andrea Cordero Lanza di Montezemolo. In it, the Cardinal postulates what might happen to the arms of a retired pope: As a Vatican herald, what would you suggest for this unique event? The last time a pope stepped down voluntarily was when Celestine V resigned in 1264. Cardinal Cordero suggested a few sensible modifications. See the article for the result. Author Carol Glatz also lays down another challenge: Here's hoping you enjoy this article. Jaune Sabre Herald Emeritus

If I may intrude; I THINK I have found the mistake. Is it related to the motto? You just love crashing the college don't you? In any event, thanks to the Jaune Sabre Herald Emeritus for the interesting article. It didn't take long to find the obvious mistake in Francis' shield. - The Fulbright Fellow
