Hi,
I started to take a look and might want to get my own coat of arms one day.
I have a few questions however:
1 ) Could I get the shape to be that of a cylinder, viewed from the front, but from an elevated position so that the circle (shown as an oval because of the perspective) at the top is visible and the bottom is rounded, but with straight sides?
2 ) Can the "shield" display that it is a cylinder via shading and light, even if the shield is made in 2 dimensions? (in short, fake the 3d look)
3 ) Can I have a beaver on it, as if is my scout animal AND the national animal of Canada?
4 ) Can I have an anvil, as it is somewhat the root of my Talossan name?
5 ) Is this the type of information you typically need to start?

Answers: 1. Devices on the CoA are normally 2 dimensional. The closest device to a column is a "Billet". There are devices that incorporate cylinders- towers, pheon , or as an ordinary - which is actually a division of a field .
( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ordinary_%28heraldry%29 ) 2. The tinctures (colors) on a CoA are solid. So, fading or shading is not done. 3. Yes. 4. Yes. 5. Yes (smiles) One basic concept to rely on is that your CoA is designed to identify you from a distance, when your face cannot me seen - in battle, in parade, or in a crowd. It also has to be easily recreated by any armorer or artist. That is why your true Coat of Arms is defined in the Blazon, not the graphics.

It's the database symbol ;-) I'm having a hard time find a "database" symbol in Heraldry... the closest we can find is a column...

Wait, I am not talking about putting a database symbol on my coat.
I am talking about making my coat on the SHAPE of the DB symbol...
Yours is a shield, with the flat top, and a pointed bottom, with rounded sides.
Mine would be like a cylinder...

Some things we just can't change. Sorry!

Couldn't he put his arms on anything he wanted, in any shape? I mean, once the College helped him with the blazon?

Really? That seems odd to me. I always thought that I could get square cufflinks or something to wear to a Living Cosa - but displayed arms must always be in that specific format, according to the College?

Can I ask a question? What are the gray bars at the bottom right of your arms? Alexandreu has 1, and Mick has 2 with lines between them...

That is the traditional method of displaying a CoA. We kinda stick to tradition and historic things...
