Am I correct with this translation?: - Department of Athletics
- Departamenteu del Aþletici
Close. Aþletici is plural, so you want dels, not del. Hool

There are a number of universities in North America that use the UT mnemonic: University of Tampa, University of Tennessee, University of Texas at Austin, and University of Toledo. Plus the other institutions in the University of Texas system tend to use UT as part of their "short" name — UT Arlington, UT Brownsville, UT Dallas, UTEP, UTSA, UT Tyler, UT Pan-American, UT Permian Basin — and UT is the U.S. postal abbreviation for Utah.
I accordingly strongly prefer the abbreviation UTal, which avoids the namespace collision. Yeah, the dots over the U are a bit distinct, but . . .
And go ahead and develop the logos for your department as you like.,

Istefan: aaah. Well, I did not realise the thing about the letters. UTal it shall be. Thanks.
Hooligan: Thanks for the translation help.

(UTal as a coinage is patterned after the similar UMass for the University of Massachusetts and UMaine for the University of Maine, ... My favourite of all these is the University of Connecticut, which is known as UConn, pronounced like "Yukon". Similar story, The University of Colorado goes by CU rather than UC. This, presumably, is to avoid collision with the University of California system, with "UCLA", "UC Santa Barbara", "UC Davis", "UC you-name-it, they-got-it". However, the Denver branch of CU ("The University of Colorado at Denver" is known as UCD. The reason for this is...well, yeah, who would want to go to a college named after what cattle spend all day chewing?) Similarly, Wyoming University goes by UW rather than WU (despite the fact that UW is also the University of Washington (State). (While "Wyoming University" is the official name of the thing, though, it is indeed more commonly referred to, even in signage, as The University of Wyoming, so that's not as interesting a case as CU.) Um, Baron Hooligan, is there a particular reason why you edited my post into nonexistence and replaced it with your reply?

Anyway, assuming the Baron did not intend to delete my post, but simply fell prey to one of the usual hazards of failing to separate administrative and normal user activities into separate accounts, here's the bullet-point version of what was a lovingly-crafted body of prose:
1) No reason for you to have noticed the namespace collision, Eðo; it's American in nature, you're in Scotland.
2) "UTal" was selected because it fit one of the usual American patterns in avoiding collisions among university abbreviations. One common one, reversing the letters, wouldn't work because there are a bunch of ones already using TU, too. The other common one, calling the university just plain "Talossa", would cause confusion with the nation itself.
3) "UTal" not only avoids confusion in naming/searches, but is not trademarked in the U.S., which makes any future merchandising less likely to get squashed.

Um, Baron Hooligan, is there a particular reason why you edited my post into nonexistence and replaced it with your reply? I did? I sure don't think I did. Did I? I didn't. Did I? Is that something I did? Was it something that happened, and if so, was I the agent of its occurrence? Did I do that? Dang. I didn't mean to. :-( Hool

Oh, another idea might be URT. Thoughts on that?
(Unless you think that wearing "URT" on the front of their sweaters might make people think our students are proudly labeling the location of their Upper Respiratory Tracts.)

Oh, another idea might be URT. Thoughts on that? 1) There's no Regipats/Kingdom in the university's name. 2) Imagining it in my head, I prefer the sound of chants of "YOU-TAL! YOU-TAL!" to chants of "YOU-ARE-TEA! YOU-ARE-TEA!" or "URT! URT!" 3) URT shows up in a trademark search as a live mark registered in 2009. Granted, this would be a separate field of endeavor, so there's little legal problem — but I'd rather avoid the collision.

Hooligan: You have done something to Istefan's post...you even ended up quoting my name but with Istefan's words from his original and now gone post. Confusing for a minute there. Istefan, I managed to read your original post earlier today before Hool got his hands on it. I'm in agreement concerning UTal...but only because I've made a second batch of logos already and don't fancy trying for a third swing... Current Logo/ Layout ideas going on here

By the way, Eðo, if you want to start your own threads on this board, rather than stuffing everything in here, go ahead. You're on the staff, stretch out your legs if you like.

Sorry, guys; complete accident. Must have completely unintentionally hit "modify" instead of "quote" and then, well, gone to town. I can't even blame the beer...because I think that night I was drinking whiskey. My bad, guys; sorry again. Hool P.S. Oh wait. Last modified 9:41 AM. May I plead the Fifth?
