All right, could someone tell us from the Republic about the current Royal Family? I saw a notice about the birthday of a princess, and I have no idea who she is

Certainly: - His Majesty King John, long ago married the (non-Talossan) Queen Kristine. His Majesty is a software developer working for Quark in downtown Denver, Colorado USA, and the royal consort is a Physician Assistant at Kaiser Permanente in Denver. They are the parents of:
- Her Highness Princess Danielle ("Nellie") Southwell (née Moulton), natural niece of John and Kristine, adopted by them in her childhood. Her Highness is a Registered Nurse, and lives in Denver. She married (the non-Talossan) Andrew Southwell and together, they are the parents of:
- George Pratt Southwell, Talossan dandelion
- (Non-Talossan) Prince Andrew Woolley, who married (also non-Talossan) Gelsey, who spent some of her teen years living with the Woolley family. Andrew is a Lieutenant in the United States Navy and a nuclear engineer, currently Operations Officer of USS Rodney M. Davis, a frigate, and stationed in Seattle, Washington, USA.
- His Grace and Highness the Prince of Prospect, Patrick ("Patch"), Duke of Florencia. He is an attorney (partner in the firm Blitz Legal) in Alexandria, Virginia, USA. As Andrew is not a Talossan citizen, Prince Patrick is the Prince of Prospect (heir apparent to the throne).
- (Non-Talossan) Prince James Woolley, who has applied for Talossan citizenship something like three times, and never followed through. He obviously has some of his father's laziness in him. James is a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, currently stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, USA.
- His Highness Prince Peter George, recently become Talossan, now a student at the University of Northern Colorado, and an Officer Candidate in the United States Marine Corps.

I think Prince James's on-again off-again do-I-want-to-be-a-Talossan-or-not-ness has something to do with beer. He has a few and starts to think it sounds like a great idea, and in that half hour's space between lubrication and incoherence, while still able to send emails and fill out on-line forms, he applies for citizenship. The next day, though, he sobers up and decides it's all very silly, or too much trouble, or something.
This is a topic of ongoing conversation.

The ZRT is seriously considering putting a "non-hereditary monarchy" plank in its platform. Still want reunision? ;-)

I'm from a country where monarchy has a bad name ever since the failure of Emperor Wilhelm II, the loser who, along with his cronies, dragged us into a world war for no reason, and last but not least because of all those frustrated monarchists who, after WW I, helped to lift Hitler into the saddle because they thought that thus they could bring the house of the Hohenzollern back into power. All of this lead to a horrible desaster. Of course there's no doubt that the Lupúls are good people, each of them, but still it is giving me gigantic itching hives to read about a royal family in a country that I am going to join. Just to let you know why I don't like to play monarchy. I'm kind of trying hard to ignore this part of the reunision deal.

If John, or Patch or whomever, ever besmirches their name or the name of our land, I have no doubt but that the great Talossan people will do what is right to correct the situation. We've done it before when a King did not act like a King should, and we can do it again. We don't worry about that, though, because, as mentioned, our King and his family are good people who understand how a royal family should behave.
We've had anti-monarchists in Talossa before (PUNK anyone?), and we've had anti-hereditary-monarchists in Talossa before, and debate is always fun and welcome. Fact of the matter is, we have a constitutional monarchy headed by a very good constitutional monarch, very completely constitutionally controlled, and an active Prince of Prospect doing exactly what a Prince of Prospect does, which is actively learn from the best possible teacher, his father, exactly how a King of Talossa should behave so as never to bring this nation to disaster or ruination.

What would happen if Prince Andrew decided to become a citizen? Would he then automatically become the Prince of Prospect? It’s just that we never had a Prince of Prospect when I was last a Kingdom subject, and I’m rather nervous of the prospect of bad feelings and rivalries in the Royal Family. Oooh, Miestrâ, now there’s an even more effective way to cause mischief in Talossa and drive s:reu Ernest around the bend: become the Talossan equivalent of a Carlist! ;D Also, is there a Queen Mother or the father of the king, whatever that title would be? Is a Patriarch, as Filaret was?

Oooh, Miestrâ, now there’s an even more effective way to cause mischief in Talossa and drive s:reu Ernest around the bend: become the Talossan equivalent of a Carlist! ;D I sometimes claim to be a novice history buff, but that's an area about which I know very little. I tried reading the article, but the politics started to get confusing ... so, I just went back to where it said something about bourbon on the throne and decided it might be a good thing. ----------------------------- Also, you've given me a wonderful idea. Since Talossa has a well established precedent of incorporating mythical heritage into its history, I'm considering linking myself in a family way to Robert I (since hey, the accusations have already been made) and claim that I was next in line to the throne. (His abdication was merely the result of diminished mental processes and can not be held against his lawful successors -- after all, hasn't he been referred to numerous times as "Mad" King Ben?) Obviously, I don't want any needless bloodshed, so I'll just submit my case to the Uppermost Cort and trust them to do the right thing - once they've gotten around to clearing up all the other cases pending before the Cort.

What would happen if Prince Andrew decided to become a citizen? Would he then automatically become the Prince of Prospect? Yes. As I understand it, Prince Patrick is merely heir presumptive under the current mix of the Organic Law and the old House Law; he can be displaced by Prince Andrew qualifying himself for the throne by becoming a citizen. Prince Andrew would not be a heir presumptive, but heir apparent. (By the way, Filaret was not titled Patriarch because he was the father of the Tsar; he was titled Patriarch because he held said office in the Russian Orthodox Church, just like the current Patriarch Kirill.)

The House Law is, in fact, clear that in case of an abdication, the line of succession acts just as if the King had died. However, it's also clear that it secures the line of succession only to descendants of Robert I, not anyone who can claim any family relation. Unless you're claiming to be a descendant of Robert I or Louis I, your claim is null. And since your immigration introduction indicated you're several years older than Robert I, such a claim would take a really, really good explanation. (Oh, and it specifies legitimate descent from a marriage approved of by the Ziu. Are you the son of Queen Jenny, or Queen Amy?)

The section of the Organic Law quoted below seems to only allow inheritance of the throne to go back to King John so it would seem to me that any descendant of King Robert I or King Loius I would not be eligible to inherit the throne.
"Section 4. The Throne shall be inherited by the descendants of His Majesty, John I, King of Talossa. The present Royal Family is styled El Ca Lupul (The House and Dynasty of Lupul). Should the King at any time renounce or lose his citizenship, that renunciation or loss shall be deemed to imply his abdication of the Throne. Upon the demise, abdication, or removal from the Throne of any King, the Crown shall pass to his next heir; but if the King has no heir, the Crown shall pass to the next heir of the previous King, or (if he in turn has no heir) to the next heir of the next previous King before him, and so on, back to King John."

The section of the Organic Law quoted below seems to only allow inheritance of the throne to go back to King John Yes. However, if there had been legitimate issue of Robert I or Louis I, he would have legally become King before that amendment was adopted. In which case John I would not have been King of Talossa (the throne never having been legally vacant), but merely a pretender to the throne. That would make the validity of that amendment to the OrgLaw, if not clearly void, at least of debatable legitimacy. Except, of course, that the amendment requiring Talossan citizenship was adopted before Louis I abdicated. So Doug Earnest would have to prove that not only was he a legitimate descendant of Robert I, he would also have to prove he was senior to Prince Louis in the succession, so that he was the legitimate king instead of Louis, as 35 RZ35 by its wording would not have actually deposed a non-citizen king, it would just prevent a non-citizen from becoming King. In which case Louis would also have been a pretender. So, if Doug Earnest can show that he was born to Robert I to either Queen Jenny or Queen Amy during the time of their marriages to Robert I, and before Louis, then he would have been King Doug I on the day Robert I abdicated, and thus have a colorable argument to being the current King of Talossa. This would of course require various sorts of time travel, but time travel is not actually prohibited by the laws of physics as currently understood.

Time travel's not banned under the OrgLaw? Great! I'm just going to hop in my TARDIS, go back to 1997 and slap KR1 in the face.

If you did that, we’d somehow mysteriously find a prohibition of time travel appear in the OrgLaw without us even having passed it.
