Due to the family situation described below, I must reluctantly resign as Senator such that the business of the realm can continue at a reasonable pace, such resignation to take place immediately such that either an appointment by the Monarch or some form of special election could take place during the month of June. I wish to remain a citizen but not to have voting responsibility for the duration of the current Ziu and perhaps into the election period for the next.
SUMMARY:
My mother has stage 4 cancer and is in poor condition. Although I can count on some assistance from siblings, I am the primary family member available for management of a variety of aspects of this situation. I will be working reduced hours for the next six months, including on volunteer or aspirational activities.
WORK:
Beginning June 1, 2010 - I intend to go on a work schedule of approximately 20 hours per week through December 31, 2010, which corresponds to the average timeframe of the situation at hand and the load balance of my family support requirements. To include volunteer work reductions, there may be some time periods where I would be available more, or others that I would be less available.
MEDICAL SITUATION:
My mother was diagnosed with an ocular melanoma in 2005, at which time I utilized FMLA to assist her while she was undergoing chemotherapy infusions. The experimental drug that was used appears to have worked well against this type of aggressive cancer as through periodic monitoring up until recently there was little to no evidence of cancer recurrence. However, starting earlier this spring scans did detect a change which showed a tumor growing in her liver. A chemotherapy embolization delivered drugs to a specific point (differing from the general circulatory infusion that was done with the other drugs previously) which resulted in reduction of the tumor, but also side effects of damage to otherwise previously healthy tissue. A second embolization was scheduled to take place, but that has been put off due to the resulting deterioration of my mom's health in recent weeks, including some ER visits but not quite to the level of hospitalization. We had a meeting with her primary oncologist today who explained the situation, discussed ways of treating pain, looking forward to her regaining strength for the next procedure, and even mentioning that yet another drug study may promise an alternative treatment (but only based upon genetic analysis of the cancer cells - there is a specific mutation that would be required for her to qualify). In addition the doctor explained the reality that if health does not improve to provide the opportunity for the next or subsequent procedures and the tumor continues to grow it is problematic for survival beyond the end of the calendar year.
