A while back I did a post in the Chat Room, to see how many Talossans had some understanding of the Klingon language. The reply to that post was generally one of interest, so I propose the following: I am a member of the Klingon Imperial Forums. I believe that, if I can get enough people interested (minimum 4 to 6, I'd think), I could get one of my fellow Klingon-language enthusiasts (one that speaks it fluently, or at least more fluently than I do) to teach a course at lÜniversità, as a guest lecturer (I believe that's the term). Now, before I go and make the request, I'd like to know: How many people would be interested in taking this course?

What a sweet idea. Add me to the list of 4 - 6 .

Looks like there is some interest in this course, can you please send me a syllabus or post it here for approval? Thanks!

Looks like there is some interest in this course, can you please send me a syllabus or post it here for approval? Thanks! I didn't mean I'd be teaching it (I'm not fluent enough), but I'm sure one of my fellow Klingon folks is fluent enough to teach it. I will post a request on the Klingon Imperial Forums for a guest-lecturer to teach at l'Üniversità, assuming I am authorized to do so.

I assume that there is also a written form of Klingon, will that be addressed in such a course? This type of course has practical applications for people who may be in search of a job - see www.parapundit.com/archives/001240.htmlKlingon Translator Needed For Oregon Mental Health Workers There are mental patients in Oregon who refuse to speak in any other language besides Klingon. The language created for the "Star Trek" TV series and movies is one of about 55 needed by the office that treats mental health patients in metropolitan Multnomah County. What do these mental patients have against Vulcan and Romulan? Why does Klingon get the special treatment? The Vulcans have done far more for humanity and their writings have much greater scientific and technical value. My guess is that this problem is a result of naturally combative Klingon personality types. The native Vulcan and Romulan speakers are less belligerent and more willing to learn and speak the language of wherever they happen to be living. But the Klingon speakers have an obvious attitude problem. By Randall Parker at 2003 May 11 12:21 PM Off Beat And Odd

I assume that there is also a written form of Klingon, will that be addressed in such a course? Well, there IS a written form of Klingon ( pIqaD), but generally people use the Latin alphabet. Even with the alphabet, any signs you see written in "Klingon" on the TV show are just random symbols.

Well, having gotten very little response over at the Klingon Imperial Forums, I've decided to take it on myself to teach this introductory course in the Klingon language. I don't expect to get very heavy into the grammar in this course, just normal "survival phrases." You know, stuff like "Where is the restroom?", "Why is my food moving?", things like that. My lessons will be drawing rather heavily from the "Conversational Klingon" audio-tapes (which, sadly, are no longer available). My syllabus is as follows: One lesson per week for nine weeks, with a final exam the tenth week. 1. Pronunciation, Basic Expressions, & Cursing 2. Questions & Common Words 3. Pronouns & Sentence Structure 4. Plurals, Numbers, & Time Expressions 5. Verbal Suffixes 6. Noun Suffixes & Indicating Possession 7. Lodging & Tourism 8. Food & Recreation 9. Emergency Words 10. Final Exam In addition, each lesson will be accompanied by a selected Klingon proverb, just for fun (tho' one or two may appear on the final as boni). As for the issue of textbooks, I recommend (but won't require) The Klingon Dictionary and Klingon for the Galactic Traveler, both by Marc Okrand. Alternatively, there is Klingonska Akademien's Online Klingon Dictionary, but I don't expect you'll need them much. Maybe for the next course (drawing more from "Power Klingon," another no-longer-available audiotape). EDIT: Slight change in lesson plan. Realized I had left something out. Nothing major. Had to combine some of the shorter lessons, though.

Looks like an organized syllabus. When would you like the course to begin?
Once you set a date, I can contact the King to set up a sub-board for it. Should be interesting!

I would like very much to begin the lessons the Monday after Juneau Day. That way I'll have time to write most of the lessons beforehand.
