Fellow members of the Senäts, I would like to take this opportunity to first welcome our two newest members, Ieremiac'h Ventrutx of Florencia and X. Pol Briga of Cezembre. The final election results having been made available by the Secretary of State, they are officially within our ranks as the winners of their respective contests. I have little doubt that these two upstanding citizens will now be a force for wisdom and sobriety within this august body, but despite that, I believe I speak for everyone when I say that we are happy and proud to have them. The Senäts is the upper body of the Ziu, and we have long terms granted by the will of the people in direct election: these are great responsibilities. I am sure it is absolutely needless to remind everyone to maintain the same level of polite discourse and keen gravitas that we have always held.
Since this is a new session of the Ziu, our first Organically-defined task shall be to select a Mençéi del Senäts (or "Lord President") from among our ranks. This is pursuant to Org.V.8 ("The Senäts shall, after every general election of a senator, choose one of its members to be the President of the Senäts to be called the Mençéi").
The incumbent in this position is Senator Nicola Casálmac'h of Benito, who has performed ably. Since she has been somewhat busy, I am taking the liberty of starting this thread and declaring nominations open for the office. I also immediately nominate Senator Nicola Casálmac'h of Benito.

I give thanks for the introduction, and look forward to the considerations of this chamber.
I have been somewhat occupied at the moment with my preparations for (www.redbullsoapboxusa.com) at the Red Rocks course. Our vehicle, "The Power of Cheese" is sure to be a fierce competitor. Just a few days later I will be travelling to Norway for the European Quiz Championships (www.norgesquizforbund.no/eqc2008index.php) and other general sightseeing until the 7th of November. Of course there is that four letter word "work" as well.
Thus, I shall be most able to participate in the discussions and beverage consumption of this august chamber in a fortnight. I look forward to that interaction.

The nomination of Senator Nicola Casálmac'h of Benito for Mençéi has been seconded. I believe it would be fortuitous to close nominations in one week, unless there are any objections.

I hesitate to close nominations at this time, since Senator Casalmac'h has not even posted to accept it or to render an opinion. It would seem wise to leave them open for another week or so to allow her to post. Should she be unable to do so, it might mean she is perhaps too busy to be Mencei.

Thank you Senator Davis for starting this matter. I would first of all like to apologize for not overseeing this, as I ought to have done, and fullly intended to do. In point of fact I must call attention to the fact that whatever I performed ably was scarcely more than nothing. In this light, I am uncertain why I have once again been nominated.
Before officially responding to this nomination, I would first like to one again nominate Senator Alexander Davis of Maritiimi-Maxhestic for Mençéi.
Now for my response: I am reluctant simply to decline, though I fear I shall not have much time to devote to this office, and the reason for that is mostly that in my position as senator I already must devote time to keep up with the bills. Perhaps I am primarily reluctant because I tried to decline last time and it failed. Yet for the next several weeks I will only have limited time due to exams and numerous papers due. If you choose to elect me once again you must do so knowing that.
I will take time within the next couple of days to cast my vote on the issues before us this Clark and check here again. In the meantime let all of us seriously consider who will best serve us as Mençéi.

I accept the nomination, but your own nomination has been made and seconded, so let's let it ride. Nominations will close in one week, for serious this time.

It has now been more than a week and we have received no new nominations, nor in fact heard from any more senators, so with reluctance I close nominations.
Now let us begin voting. Lest we drag the vote on indefinitely, let the deadline be the end of the December Clark. I allow this much time to allow sufficient time for all, but please cast your votes as soon as possible.
The nominees are Senator Alexander Davis of Maritiimi-Maxhestic and myself, Senator Nicola Casálmac'h of Benito.
Thank you.

The senator from Cezembre stumbles away from a table laden with the various debris from a Thanksgiving feast, grabbling a goblet about the size and shape of a pilgrim's hat, quite full of a tasty pinot noir and quaffs a sizeable portion to sustain his travel to the senate chambers. There, he slumps mightily into his chair and proclaims
"I vote for Senator Alexander Davis for Mençéi"
then tilts slowly to the side and falls fast asleep.

Madame Mençéi -
I rise with a simple request. Perhaps it would be helpful to have a statement from each candidate which would lay out an agenda or a few goals. This might help the voters.
Respectfully,
Sir T

Respectfully, Sir T The senator from Cezembre, till now snoozing away, suddenly snorts and wakes up breifly. Hearing nothing, he mumbles "what I said before is still my position" and drifts back into slumber.

Madame Mençéi - I rise with a simple request. Perhaps it would be helpful to have a statement from each candidate which would lay out an agenda or a few goals. This might help the voters. Respectfully, Sir T I will do my best to oblige, and I apologize for not doing so sooner. I have a great deal left to do, as exams are this week. I would like to see us return to the days when the Senäts was active. All of my efforts last time were of no avail, and indeed that is something that requires a great deal of all of our time. I have since given this some thought. Although it is not necessarily the cause, and may in fact be no more than coincidence, the fact is that we used to make a great many more jokes and humorous bills; we now have become very serious. In striving to imitate larger countries, we have begun to take on their habits of seriousness, and even imitate their politics. I have always been outspoken concerning Talossa as a real nation, but if this is what it means to be a real nation, then perhaps that is no longer the greatest ideal for which to strive. If we cannot be our joking selves there is nothing to keep us interested and involved, nor to hold the attention of all our new citizens. We have bills such as "The Aarrrrgh Matey's Act" and "The Staff of Herron Act" and we speak of the TCF: this is the stuff of which Talossa is made. For my part, I intend (right after exams) to keep up on bills in the Hopper and to assist in getting proper discussions going when necessary. I also hope to introduce various random things over the course of the year to help bring back that spirit of fun and jocularity. I fear my plan is vaguer than I would wish, but I have not much time. I hope this helps. -Nic Casálmac'h

I believe the proper purview of the Mencei is to run Senatorial proceedings, create threads for each month's Senats votes, and little else. Keeping up discussions on bills should be the responsibility of every Senator (and in fact every legislator). The Mencei's only real function should be as a ceremonial bastion of pompousness and provider of formalities. So I suppose I will just keep starting up proceedings threads like this one and keep starting up voting threads like I always have in the past (although Senator Briga beat me this month!). In short, I will keep acting the way I always have been. I don't promise a whole lot of new action, but I will be here.

As he sits at his first "permanent" desk at the squadron, drunk with only the power that comes from having his own desk and computer and not alcohol because then he couldn't fly tonight, the Senator from Atatürk rises to cast his vote.
I proudly vote for Senator Casálmac'h.
God save the King!
The Senator leaves and pretends to do some work.
