My Lord President, fellow Senators —
For the last fifteen months, it has been a source of vast pride and pleasure to me to serve in this House as the representative of the great province of Florenciâ. But all things below the moon come to an end. Other duties call me, and I must now leave this body.
The political party with which this particular “outgoing Senator was commonly associated” has just sold its office furniture, paid the printer’s bill, and had the phones turned off. So the nomination of a Senator to fill out the remainder of my term falls to the Governor of Florenciâ — that is, to yourself, my Lord Castiglhâ. (Which seems convenient, if nothing else.)
So … farewell to the Senate! Farewell to this desk, these mysterious scratches on the back of the chair — and on the wall nearby —, these stains on the carpet. Never shall I (unless “cited to testify in a Senate commission”) again enter this beloved chamber, the scene of so many ecstatic victories, bitter defeats, dissipated revellings.
My Lord, I hereby resign from the Senate of the Kingdom of Talossa, effective immediately.
I yield the floor … forever.
