November's Heraldry Quiz:Pictured above are the arms of then Archbishop Joseph Zen Ze-kiun, SDB, STL, PhD of Hong Kong, prior to his elevation to the College of Cardinals by Pope Benedict XVI on 22 February 2006. Who of the College can suggest why the good Archbishop chose purpure for his gallero? Extra points for a complete blazon for this achievement of arms. -- Jaune Sabre Herald, Squirrel King at Arms

Esteemed Squirrel King at Arms, May those who are not members of the College attempt to answer these perplexing questions?

Would it have anything to do with Archbishop Zen supposedly being appointed a "secret cardinal" ?

Who of the College can suggest why the good Archbishop chose purpure for his gallero? Quoting Wikipedia on Ecclesiastical heraldry: Chinese bishops often avoid using green galero in their arms since "wearing a green hat" is the Chinese idiom for cuckold. Rather than green, these bishops use a variety of colors from violet and black to blue, or scarlet if a cardinal. Anyone want to try for a blazon?

Anyone want to try for a blazon? This device is really really bad heraldry, and any blazon is going to be really really bad, too. Unblazonable, actually. Like, we have two things — the anchor (drawn unheraldically in perspective), and the pedestal gules surmounted by a monstrance or — extending (impossibly) beyond the edges of the shield. We have white mountains against a white sky. We have so much layering — lymphad over anchor over city over mountains over field — that it makes me want to weep. We have unidentifiably small charges, like that statue (?) azure on the OTHER red pedestal. Blanc Wolf says "Eeeewwwwwww". Cardinal Zen, for all I know, might be a great guy; but a good herald he ain't.
