Why do lions appear on coats of arms even though Europe didn't have any?Fellows of the College, distinguished nobles, knights and fellow citizens: The Straight Dope web page has an interesting question posed by Zach Church of Washington, D.C.: How did some medieval Europeans come to display lions on their coats of arms? Just as in Christian Scripture, the lion is presented. In bygone eras, mountain lions had a wide range across more northerly climes than they are presently found in.
