I voted "NO," but for some reason, it logged my vote as "YES."
I tried to change it, but the system wouldn't let me.

I would have no quarrel with a law that would require a background check to become a citizen. In a sense, that is not that different from what real countries do when someone wants to immigrate. The main question would be the extant of such a check.
I am however completely opposed to background check on someone who is already a citizen as this is pointless and of absolutely no advantage.
I would prefer not to have any check at all, but instead rely on the trust of an individual. We could for example ask whether a prospective was ever convicted of a serious crime (we'd need to define serious). Lying on an immigration statement if ever found would be fraud.
In all honesty, I am not certain where I stand on the subject... But I know what I would go along with and what I'd oppose.

Maybe it's the degree of trouble the person would go to in obtaining information.
"Googling" as opposed to paying fees for info.

Exactly, that is a very good distinction as well...

Ah...fuck that. If this was a fraternal order or something, then I would support the scrutiny. It isn't and I don't.
We should allow anyone that applies to the Kingdom a guarantee of privacy and basic posting pivilages so we can feel them out. That was always the way it was.
Know that I have NEVER supported the civics exam or the essay junk. Hell, even at 17, I thought the essay was a joke. If Ben still has it, he could show you my little paragraph.
The bottom line is that nobody should be investigated. That is Nazi/Gestapo shit...something that has no place here; Whether Google or user-pay.

Mind you, I didn't say I condoned it. Prospectives and cits should be assured that their privacy is respected, whether they've got a public record or not.
I was just pointing out that some info is more readily available.
