Out of interest, how many Talossan's have some level of Scottish or Celtic ancestry? I know that some 9 million or so (US) Americans claim a Scottish or Irish-Scottish ancestry. Are any of them here? I'm interested to know just how many Talossans have some sort of celtic connection? ( Ián Tamorán S.H., like myself, has some Irish ancestry, yes?)

Everyone's got Celtic ancestry. Those Celts got around. Apart from the Irish parts of my family, my great-great-grandfather David Wighton emigrated to Wellington, NZ, from Dundee in 1885 and became that city's leading confectioner.

I mean modern Celts with some connection to the "Six Celtic Nations", not so much the Indo-European Celtic peoples in general. You might find this page interesting. Seems the Wighton line went to Glasgow and also Canada. wightonfamily.ca/genealogy/towns/glasgow.wightons.html(although, the researcher who wrote this is obviously a 'Thomas the Tank' seeing as how we uses the term Glasgowians for Glaswegians.)

I was born in Dublin, and (amongst other things) am an Irish citizen.... AND I married a half-Scottish girl over 50 years ago. Our children have married into (a) a *large* Irish family, most of whom live in the UK, and (b) a Chinese-Canadian family - which has nothing to do with the Celts. Under Jewish laws all my immediate family are Jews (which, again, has nothing to do with the Celts - or the religions we actually practise), and 30% of us are left-handed.... and there are three redheads in the immediate family group (which does have something to do with the Celts).

According to some old advertisements he sold cough drops featuring the secret ingredient of cocaine, so he was certainly hardcore. Do other Scots have any amusing stereotypes about people from Dundee? Sometimes I think I should follow one of the Dundee clubs in the Scottish Premier League but there's no point*. The funny thing is that like many colonial families, my family went out of their way to forget their old life, and I only found out about Great-Great-Granddad Davey from my own research. My mother remembered that her grandmother came from a rich family but that was all. * "I follow Partick Thistle. That's Partick Thistle FC. I say that because many English people who hear our results on the radio think we're called Partick Thistle Nil." - Billy Connolly

My best friend's partner, born in Yorkshire, lived most of their youth on the Isle of Man and absolutely hated it as the most backwards, repressive place imaginable. Apparently once they ran away to Belfast, and if Belfast sounds attractively liberal then where you come from must be a total dump. But their brother apparently went to a Manx-language school, which is quite nice.

I have a bit of a soft spot for the Thistle (and for Motherwell, or The Wee Well). I've always wondered what it's like to be a full on supporter of a Scottish team that isn't one of the 'big two'. I mean, what's the point? Ye know? Then I think, supporting one of those teams must be more exciting. The stakes are higher. The losses are real. The wins are huge.

I have a soft spot for Celtic just because most of my people were Irish Catholic and their fans are generally left-wing. (I once had a Scottish lady on my Gaelic football team who followed Rangers and I was all like... wow, you'd probably be stoned back home for associating with Fenians.) But there's no challenge or interest in following a steamroller which almost always wins. My beloved Wellington Phoenix, the only NZ club playing in Australia's top league, are permanent underdogs and it creates a fine sense of fan community. The only British club I actually follow is AFC Wimbledon because it's a wonderful story of a community's club being stolen by big business and arrogant FA bureaucrats and getting it back, better than before.

I am also partly Scottish. In fact, my entire genetic history can be traced to the British Isles. My ancestry can be traced in a direct line to several Kings of Scotland (as in Robert the Bruce being a direct great-grandfather).
