The accusation of "ruining people's fun" is an interesting one in that it has an essential "status quo bias". It was thrown at proponents of the F-F merger, but imagine if I'd said that opponents of the merger were "ruining the fun of people who wanted a new province".
That said, it's interesting that all the people who came out of the woodwork to keep Florencia independent have now run back into the woodwork to the point that we might not have a Senäts election there. If the anti-merger forces had not cared about Florencia at all - but just wanted to "ruin the fun" of merger proponents - is that not exactly what they would have done?
One person's "fun-ruining" is another person's "stopping bad things happening", is my point.

In the case of the FF merger, the two old provinces had to be eliminated in order to create something new which would be better. In this case, there is no proposed replacement which requires the elimination of the provinces (or the Monarchy).

But honestly, nothing would make me happier than to see people replacing the provinces with something that fits their needs better. Whether it be something like the Cjovani, or even real die-hards that wanted to keep MM going. Freedom of association is a wonderful thing.

The existence of the provinces does not prevent this from happening.

If the provinces served their constituent populations in some way, then I can't help but think they would no longer be moribund. IE, they are a habit we developed that served Talossa at one time. Evidently that habit is no longer useful.

The slate pretty much is blank when it comes to the other kinds of societies you suggest. The existence of the provinces does not hinder the creation of them, especially since it is not like there are a lot of people spending their time on the provinces when they would rather be doing something else. The provinces are moribund because there are not enough active citizens in any of them to make them work. Hence, we should consolidate.

We could consolidate all the provinces into one nation. Just an idea.

One person's "fun-ruining" is another person's "stopping bad things happening", is my point. The difficulty with those lines, though, is that they can translate into a truly terrible time. There have been those who have impinged their own time in Talossa, doing things they don't want to do, in order to stop their opposition from "harming Talossa."
We can't preserve this thing in amber, folks. To do so will be to kill it.
