English completely devoid of any French (or any Romance influence for that matter) as far as orthography goes would be more similar to Icelandic as would all Germanic languages be if it wasn't for those meddling meddlers!

In 1989, SF author Poul Anderson wrote a short essay called "Uncleftish Beholding," using almost exclusively words of Germanic origin. And Justin B Rye has written an essay on Alternese, which is similar, but goes all the way back to Anglo-Saxon and derives an entire alternate history from it, starting with an English victory in 1066.

Icelandic preserved many of the orthographic qualities of ancient Germanic. In fact, Icelanders can easily read sagas and documents written a thousand years ago and understand it completely! They have a policy that tries to preserve the language as it has been for thousands of years
