I, for one, would always prefer a Borsalino to a "hoody", and dark leather shoes to sneakers, because that's cool, even swell, but you know, "cool" is a relative term.

Which, then, is a matter of taste. You could look at it that way, but these are rules that people have come up with long before any of us were born and seem to be accepted as good rules by everyone everywhere to make good designs for things like this. But yes, if you are asking "where does it say in Talossan law that we have to have a heraldically valid anything?" the answer is that it doesn't (and shouldn't; heraldry isn't a matter for a criminal or civil court). You can do whatever you want. I'm just letting you know when it's hanging on a flagpole and you're on the other side of the block, it'll be harder to make out than if you have a heraldically valid flag. Hool

If a Vuodean may enter. We recently came to agreement, in Vuode, that a constitution should not mention the flag and it's design. I quote Senator V, who said, "The constitution's purpose is to set up how our government will function and some enshrining of rights that should never be violated, not to include legislation".

Because I just passed the dividing line of midnight over here, I have to comment on this in a very short way: Hm.
(I'll be more verbose tomorrow, which is in fact a few hours later, today.)
((This was directed in the direction of the Baron H., but some people were faster at the posting trigger.))

Red and green are a lot easier to distinguish at a distance than yellow and green. Well, a nice bright yellow (like say, maybe a proper shiny gold colour) on a dark green would be easy. But get a dingier yellow or brighter green in there...but now I'm off topic I think, if I ever was on it.

That's why it doesn't fit, sorry.

Because I just passed the dividing line of midnight over here, I have to comment this in a very short way: Hm.By all means, don't mind me. As you say, it is not law that a flag has to follow any rules at all. You had asked how to heraldically describe the one you have, though, in that fancy "blazon" language, so when I did so, I pointed out that though the language may be proper in heraldry (with the "gules" and "vert" and stuff), the arrangement of those words would not be. But it may not matter to you guys, and if not, that's fine. Seriously. Hool

I wonder if anyone would object if I moved all the flag-and-heraldry posts from this thread to a new one, and let this thread be about the veto override thingie. If even one person says "good idea" before someone else says "don't you dare", I will make it so. Deal?

Respectfully, Baron, the standard for vexillology in the Kingdom is the NAVA guidelines, as expressed in Good Flag, Bad Flag, not the traditional rules of heraldry. And among the specific examples of a good flag in that work is the flag of Bangladesh, which is a red circle on a green field.

S:r Perþonest is correct that vexillology is not heraldry, and has different rules. This is why the College of Arms needs someone (The Lookout Fellow has volunteered) to get its Department of Vexillology up to snuff so that the Squirrel King of Arms can concentrate on Arms and leave the flag stuff to someone who knows vexillology. As Emily Litella said....."Never mind." Hool

I would just like to say that I suggested the original Firefly flag to begin with but a certain someone in the Republic *cough* Tato *cough* decided to change it.
