The Minister of Immigration may or may not ask "controversial" questions. This arose not too long ago, and parties differed on the matter.
Another point of political difference might be programs like TalossAssist, which some support and some may feel to be superfluous.
Those are two important ones off the top of my head. I am sure there may be others. This is not something that is broken, I feel.

MinImm is inherently political, my observations in private on the current degree of politicization notwithstanding.

The ISSUE of immigration may be inherently political, but that is not how the MINISTRY operates - my job is to meet and greet, not decide matters of policies.

But again, what really IS the policy besides meeting and greeting? The only political aspect of the job I can see is which party is in power and made the appointment.

Brad, what about such immigration issues as: how long should the intro period be? how long should the essay be? when should it be produced? what about internal policy, to do with TAs, etc? there has been a large amount of discussion on this this year, as it happens (especially on requirements before a prospective can be petitioned for citizenship)

Who is to be held accountable for the government's immigration policy?
