Still to do: - Crest
- Supporters
- Compartment
- get rid of the white ghost pixels around the edge
Estimats Conta Lauriéir - The College of Arms stands ready to assist you with completing your entire achievement of arms. Our next challenge is to help you nail down the appropriate supporters for your shield. The two gentlemen in the image below are supporters: For your Lordship's supporters, we may want to work from your motto "We Shall All See" for ideas. The animals with the keenest eyesight are the family of raptors: owls, eagles and hawks. Here are a few examples of raptors as supporters for your consideration. Two eagles Or membered Gules each gorged with a collar Azure pendent therefrom a hurt charged with a hand, standing on a mound of prairie grass Or above barry wavy Azure and ArgentTwo ferruginous hawks (Buteo regalis) proper, each gorged with a collar Vert pendent therefrom a ploughshare and standing on a combine harvester knife set on a field of wheat and Marie Bugnet roses properUpon a mount Vert set with Common Red Paintbrush (Castilleja miniata) and dexter a lodgepole pine bough and sinister a white spruce bough both fructed all proper rising above barry wavy Argent and Azure charged with a salmon leaping also proper dexter a bald eagle the body proper winged per fess embattled Or and Azure ducally crowned Or sinister an osprey the body proper similarly winged and crowned (Can you tell that these are all Canadian?) As I stated, the College stands ready to take your direction on your supporters. Please open your mind to us and share your thoughts, and we shall make them real. -- Jaune Sabre Herald, Dean

Dean Jaune Sabre Herald:
Thanks for your seemingly infinite patience which I am afraid I will have to tax a bit more...
Are owls do-able for supporters? Can they be asymmetrical somehow...with one looking toward the shield, say, and the other looking directly at the viewer? Or maybe one looking up and the other down?
Let me know your thoughts...but, please, take your time.

Owls can certainly be done as supporters. Below are a couple of examples, from the boroughs of Surrey Heath (top) and Leeds (bottom) in England. The Surrey Heath arms have an owl and a falcon. Unlike most heraldic birds, the owl faces the viewer by default, because owls are most recognizable that way (they don't have much of a facial profile). But it should be possible to make them different. Notice that Surrey Heath's owl faces the viewer (default for owls) while the falcon is in profile (default for birds in general).

Thanks for your seemingly infinite patience which I am afraid I will have to tax a bit more... Good my Lord - this taxes me not, nor does it tax the College. This is part of our mission. We are here to serve. Are owls do-able for supporters? Can they be asymmetrical somehow...with one looking toward the shield, say, and the other looking directly at the viewer? Or maybe one looking up and the other down? As the Bartleby Pursuivant has noted above, owls are used for supporters. I concur with his suggestion about the facing of an owl - while most supporting raptors are seen in profile, the proper stance of an owl seems to be facing the front. (I'm trying to keep this in plain language instead of casting it in heraldic argot.) One point to consider is that owls are more often connected to the idea of wisdom, deriving from their role as messengers of Athena. (I'm sure this is where the Harry Potter authoress got the idea.) True sight, as referenced in your motto, is more often associated with the falcon or the eagle. To call someone "eagle-eyed" is to complement their vision. To call someone "owl-eyed" is not as positive. You can choose whatever supporters you wish, however, it it the duty of the College to look at them from all angles. Please let us know how else we may assist you. Your obedient servant - -- Jaune Sabre Herald, Dean

Ah, thanks for the sage advice.
I think I may want both birds: an Hegelian owl and sharp-eyed falcon--like the Surrey Heath arms you referered to earlier.
I'm afraid to ask this, but what is the signifance of the right and left sides? An owl on the left, a falcon on the right? Or the other way around? Hegel's kind of a rightwinger (though not a US Republican type rightwinger, who, whatever value they may or may not possess, do not really qualify as real conservatives), but his most famous student is identifed with the left wing. Hmmm.

Hmmm. Not too much significance, although the right is traditionally the position of honour, as in many cultures. For example animals face to the right by default. (Heraldry even uses the Latin terms "dexter" and "sinister" for "right" and "left," which are loaded with connotations.) Of course, in heraldry dexter and sinister are reckoned from the perspective of the bearer of the shield, not the viewer. So the "dexter" (right) supporter will be on the left side of the image.
