[Senate] Marcianüs Hearing: Introduction and Report

Dear colleagues,

the Prime Minister has today transmitted to the Ziu her intention to nominate S:reu Viteu Marcianüs , currently serving among us as Senator for Vuode, to the vacancy on the Uppermost Court. First off, may I congratulate him on this unique honour, pay tribute to his contributions to the Senate and to Talossa in general, and wish him well on his future endeavours.

As Mençei, it is my duty to ensure the role of the Senate is upheld throughout the political process. For this reason, I have sought with the nominee and the Prime Minister to arrange for the Senate to provide scrutiny, in the form of a public hearing to take place before voting on the nomination takes place. Both the nominee and the Prime Minister have been cooperative and supportive of my request, and I thank them for their collaboration.

The process of formal scrutiny of a nominee to any position is, regrettably, unknown to Talossa. As such, the Senate finds itself in a position to make new precedent; this is positive, as we have the opportunity of setting a new benchmark for how nominations to important positions should be handled. This also means, though, that the Senate is not operating on known ground, and that the Mençei is in the natural position of offering guidance and regulation. As such, I thought fit to publicly announce a set of rules that will govern the hearing, which I will post in due course.

I can amend the rules at any time, but as the hearing is scheduled to begin very soon (though I will probably delay the actual start by a bit) any issues people have with them should be brought up relatively quickly.

I see no issue with the rules, sir. So long as each member receives sufficient notice with respect to the start of his respective interviewing period, this is a superb idea. I especially support using the mechanism of the Committee of the Whole.

I am looking forward to the vetting!

I have no proposed changes at this time and fully support this vetting process. I only seek clarification as to when the Committee will come to order and commence the process.

Jan 6: Start of "interviews", in order of seniority. Indicatively:

Fellow Senators, purely as a procedural point, the Committee of the Whole House has adjourned and reported with the following message: "The Committee of the Whole House has considered the nomination of S:reu Viteu Marcianüs to the position of Justice of the Uppermost Cort of Talossa and, having considered such, recommends S:reu Marcianüs for the said position."

Without objection, the report is received and the Committee stands adjourned sine die.

A point of order, sir: I think that the Committee intended to leave out the "[moved the comma]" bit and it was an editorial note ;-)
