Per Tomás today via FB
"So, for any friends who may not be aware, I almost died on Friday, September 20 due to a rare and deadly condition called an aortic dissection. This has a low survival rate, but I was very fortunate: a nine-hour long surgery at the hands of a very skilled surgeon saved my life. I am now beginning the very long, slow, and painful recovery process. It will be quite some time before I’ll be able to go back to work, or indeed do much of anything. I don’t know yet whether I’ll be able to play the bagpipes again. A lot is still up in the air.
However, nearly dying does bring a lot of focus and clarity to things, in terms of what’s really important. It’s also deeply humbling to find out, when you almost die, how many people genuinely love you. The kindness and generosity of friends and colleagues over the past week, the outpouring of support, has again been truly humbling, and is most deeply appreciated. Thank you, all of you, for everything."
Please continue to send email to the address referenced later on in this post. Continued prayers, love, and light, peeps!

Per me from earlier this week:
I have been given permission to post here that in the past two weeks, Tomás Gariçéir has been in a hospital near death. Rather than paraphrase everything badly, I give you Facebook posts and messages from his wife, Maggie C.:

23 Sept 2019 FB status update: "I know a lot of you are wondering exactly what happened to Thomas and now that he is awake he has given me permission to let you all know. He had a very compromised dissected aorta with accompanying issues and evidence of past trauma. The surgery was open heart and lasted 9 hours. If we had waited another 48 hours we would be having a very different conversation. The doctor believes it is most likely genetic as his uncle died of the same thing four years ago. Unless you know that it runs in the family, you would never know to monitor it. His mother was tested after his uncle’s death and it came back negative so we didn’t think to test Thomas. It is something he will have to be evaluated for his entire life and we will genetically test him and the kids to see exactly the root cause. Life may be very different for him and I honestly don’t know what our new normal will look like. But I’m hopeful and know we have all of you to support us 💜!"
24 Sept 2019 private message from Maggie to me and really to all of us:
"If you can include this e-mail people can write to him: getwellsoonthomas@gmail.com
and perhaps the PayPal donation link -
paypal.me/pools/c/8isyzODqok
That would be amazing! A lot of people are asking how they can help and defraying living costs at this point is the most tangible thing for people far away."

Tomás Garicér is a friend to all of us, and he needs our prayers, support, and if possible, a little PayPal.
Many thanks on behalf of him and his family in advance!
