In order to qualify to use "family arms" one has to be the eldest son of the eldest son of the eldest son (and so on) all the way back to the granting of the arms. If anywhere in that line there is even one who was not the "eldest son" then the arms didn't pass down. - Kingsbridge I'm not asking to use this particular COA, just a design LIKE it. Like the cross bones on a black shield. I understand that. I'm saying that we can't duplicate these arms as they are currently blazoned because they belong to (quite possibly) someone else. There would have to be significant changes. We can use crossed bones on a sable background but not JUST that or the way it is used now. - Kingsbridge

Sadly, my great-grand father didn't get any arms... but he got a cross from the head priest (curé) for helping the town, and it passed to my grandfather, then to my father and now to me. I do not have a son.

You should request arms, and naturally the primary charge would have to be a cross patterned after the one your great-grandfather received.

I did request arms a little while ago, and nothing came out of it (in part because I became sick)

I did request arms a little while ago, and nothing came out of it (in part because I became sick) Wow, almost a year ago eh? I'm sorry your request was missed. Would you like me to revive it? Patience, padawan. Your request hasn't been ignored, people have been discussing it with you.

Azul S:r Newton,
I am the Kingsbridge Pursuivant and I've been charged by the dean to assist you in the creation of your arms. In your request, you stated you would like arms that have a black background and a maple leaf as a charge. Is this still the case?
Regards,
- Kingsbridge

This is my main idea (and most preffered one). I also said something about crossbones, but I like the maple leaf idea

Will there be any crowns/leaves around my COA or will it be just the shield? I ask this because on most COA's I see, have something above them.

The arms of the gentry (as yours will be) are not decorated beyond the escutcheon (the shield) itself.

I read the topic about requesting arms, and I was a bit confused when it said things about a motto, so are we allowed to have mottos, or are only knights and induviduals with titles allowed to have mottos?

Talossan practice is to only grant recognition of mottos for knights and above. Of course, nothing prevents you from adopting a personal motto, but it won't be officially recognised by the College of Arms.
