In Sweden, the Nobility had to consider how nobility is acquired/lost. Traditionally, a noblewoman who marries a commoner loses her Noble status, whereas a female commoner who marries into a Noble family acquires it.
The ruling was that a male commoner who marries a Nobleman becomes a Nobleman himself, but a Noblewoman who marries a female commoner loses her Noble status. A quite logical extrapolation of the existing custom, but one that made a few people angry as it preserves and reinforces the inferiority of women in these matters. Most feminists could of course not care less what the aristocracy does.

Wait up:
When a female noblesse marries a commoner, she loses her noble status. But at the same time, the commoner woman marries a noblewoman - will then, effectively, the nobility be transferred from one person unto the other?!

No, a commoner woman must marry a Nobleman to be accepted into the aristocracy.

The retaining or loss of "Noble" status depends on which gender is holding the Title. If the Title is held by a male, it is shared by the partner. If held by a female, it is lost.
