All right!
Firstly, my thanks go to Vuode's Premier, cxhn. Grischün, for inviting us to his beautiful province, the home of Talossan independence.
Secondly, welcome to all players and spectators of the 2014 Talossan Interprovincial Chess Tournament!
Here are the formally registered players so far. A maximum of 8 entries will be accepted.
Here are the rules. If you don't like any of these rules or want them changed, now by God is the time to say so!
1. The tournament Arbiter is Miestrâ Schivâ. She will publish all results and current tournament rankings in threads on the Vuode forum.
2. To facilitate timekeeping and make sure that the basic rules of chess are followed, each game will be conducted over the Free Internet Chess Server. Please register for FICS, if you haven't already, and tell the Arbiter your login name ("handle"). Please check the site out and learn its basics!
3. Each game will be played with a clock of 30 minutes, with an added 2 minutes (120 seconds) per move. Thus, when you are on FICS, the instruction you will need to challenge player "VuodeRocks" to a game will be:
4. All players will register for the tournament by sending email to the Arbiter at doloras AT randomstatic DOT net. Registrations close at midnight Talossan Standard Time, March 18 2014/xxxv.
5. The tournament proper will be scored by the Swiss system (i.e. winners play winners and losers play losers), for four rounds (modified so each player plays white twice and black twice). The draw for the first round will be made by the Arbiter as soon as registrations are complete. The draw for each subsequent round will be made once all results for the preceding round are in. The draw will indicate who is playing who and which colour each player will take.
6. After every game, the players shall inform the Arbiter of the result. If the game was played on FICS, then the Arbiter will be able to look up the game on the database, and post the score of the game on the website. (NOTE: If the game was played some other way, the players will have to manually submit the score of the game to the Secretary before it can be "counted". We operate a tight ship here.)
7. The top two ranked players after the Tournament will play a best-of-four match between them. The winner of this match will be the Talossan Chess Champion with all bragging rights pertaining thereunto. In the event of a tie (2-2), the player who ranked first after the Tournament will be declared the winner.
8. Although there is no way to enforce this rule, it should be remembered that using chess books, programmes or any other artificial aid while the game is actually going on is generally considered base and reprehensible cheating.
And remember: I am the Arbiter. I know the score. From square one I'll be watching all 64.
