Oh, by the way: I wanted to ask about the vowel qualities!
Is there any rule as to whether "e" is /e/ or /ɛ/, or "o" is /o/ or /ɔ/, or "a" is /a/ or /ɑ/? What about it if they are unstressed? Does "o" change to /ə/ or /ʊ/? What about i? Unstressedly /ɪ/?

I have been exposed to el glheth < blast! can't find the right character on this keyboard> before, and - at times - I even understand it... but the eccentricities, the eccentricities of it all (( sigh)). And I agree - our profs. are singularly capable - indeed, plurally capable!

(...) I have been exposed to el glheth < blast! can't find the right character on this keyboard> (...) The decimal ASCII-Code to þ is "231" (Alt + 231 on your number pad). Majuscule will then be "232". If we are at it, the decimal ASCII code for ç is "135", for Ç, however, it is "128". The eszet (ß) occupies place "225". ä is "132", Ä is "142". ö is "148", Ö is "153". ü is "129", Ü is "154". You can also play with ASCII. In some programmes, you get Chinese/Indian/Arabic/... characters as the number goes up. Sadly, not here.

Memorizing ASCII codes is not my way. If I am not able to type the character directly, I type the escape sequence ampersand + auml + semicolon (for ä), ampersand + thorn + semicolon (for þ), ampersand + THORN + semicolon (for Þ), ampersand + szlig + semicolon (for ß), etc.
Easier still, though (but you can't do it in browsers, unfortunately), hold Ctrl down, type (for example) a colon, then let the keys up and type a to get an ä. Same trick works for á, à, â, etc. (using ' or ` or ^ in place of the colon).

I use the Talossan keyboard layout. It works great for me on a Mac.

Well, I just apply the according keyboards and switch between them, so I am a l m o s t fluently typing in Turkish, German, Arabic, Croatian and IPA, and some other I find your way seems very tiring and prolonging, but I am a lazy-person anyway.

Where I come from (maybe, that is an overstatement), it's the International Phonetical Alphabet or the International Phonetics Association and I meant the former.

I am reading about it. I would like to try out one. But, alas, I live in Germany and I would not know where to find it.

I am reading about it. I would like to try out one. But, alas, I live in Germany and I would not know where to find it. Wow. A land without IPA? And here I always respected the Germans for their beer. Those days are over, and now I pray I never find myself in Germany. Wow. A land without IPA. What a sad place. I can't even imagine.

Hahahaha. I said I would not know where to get it. There might be, but as I never heard of IPA-beer, I didn't look out for it.
