HomeworkNothing to turn in this week, ... Wrong. I'm going to override my colleague and demand that he assign you some homework. Sorry, students, but we'll come up with something. Proffy Ugh, fine... Everybody, in addition to flipping through those books - Watch "Tusk" by Fleetwood Mac on YouTube. This should fill you with patriotic pride, being one of our national songs, and the one after which King Robert I named his Talossan language newspaper so instrumental to the development of the language.
- After you're done with that, use The Översteir to look up anywhere from 10 to 20 nouns, preferably with a theme like "colours"or "months" or something.
- Then (using Google Translate or a dictionary or whatever) look up those same nouns in a different Romance language (Lüc, you're not allowed to use Italian, and ditto for anyone else who speaks a Romlang natively).
- Comment, if you wish, on the similarities and differences you see (if any). That is, if you see that Spanish and Talossan are similar except that the word-ending in Spanish is -o where Talossan is -eu, say so. And if you notice things that are DIFFERENT, like the appearance of a Germanic (non-Romance) sound in an otherwise Romance-derived word, point out that you noticed it.
Turn in your list by 11:59 pm Talossan time (UTC-5) on Saturday. Now, I'm off to get this some iodine/bactine/something for this whip-mark.

In the lecture, the letter-group "sch" was mentioned as being one piece of evidence of Germanic influence on Talossan. Another characteristic of Talossan that provides evidence of this same influence can be seen in the Talossan words for "enough", "brow", and "peach". enough: aßei brow: ußa peach: peßica Talossan also uses the ß (esseta) like German.

Technically, colors aren't nouns... What about "orange"? Or "cardinal"? Don't golfers talk about "reaching the green"? If you're turning a profit, are you not "in the black"? Don't unexpected things come "out of the blue"? And what about Mrs Skelton's son, the famous mime of the 1940's? He was as proper a noun as you can get! Okay, okay, yeah, yeah. Whatever. :-) Hool

One of the coolest things about Talossan is the Thorn. Have you ever seen a better letter than Þ? Oh, and Talossan uses frequently "tg" and "-ziun", commonly used in Romansh.

When I decided on my Romance Language for this particular assignment I originally chose Spanish. Well looking at the words I was getting from the Google Translator I was shaving a hard time seeing the connection, some words are similar and others are way off. So I decided to translate my list to Latin as well. The Talossan to Latin was very similar on most words. It shows very clearly how Talossan has come from Latin roots and how some of the Spanish has gone very far from Latin.

I noticed some words were similar between all languages, like photon, bomb, and nation There were also words unsimalar between all languages like star and language. Some words were only similar with certain languages like house and the same spelling between el Glelþ and Spanish. Well, that will be all.

Talossan Galician Romanian Other virt verde verde azir azul azuriu bléu blao - celestéu celeste cer violet violeta violetă purpül púrpura purpură funçat ? ? roxh roxo roșu ambracafirancheu ambarino/café - braneu bruno brun negreu negro negru adeg'nás adega - biançéu branco - alveu albo/alvo alb alemlar ? ? glauc glauco glauc grischun gris - ezeríeu ? ? Hungarian - ezüstös everíeu beis bej vermel vermelho - cinesch chinés chinezesc
From a lexical standpoint, Talossan uses very contemporary derivations for many of its colors, which mainly only Western European languages have put into use, showing large gaps in the Romanian cognates, for example. Talossan also seems to favor idiomatic formations for some of the more ancillary colors, for example, for adeg'nás, which seems to have derived from a Romance word for "wine cellar", most likely borrowed from an Iberian Romance language, and for cinesch, which phonetically suggests an origin from the word for "Chinese". From a morphophonemic standpoint, Talossan frequently shows words ending in consonants where a final vowel is found in other Romance varieties, usually an unstressed "a", but also unstressed "o" (< Latin -um) in places. Where the final "o" is conserved, it is diphthongized: "eu" [ɘʊ]~[ɪw]. Talossan adopts many phonological trends from (American) English, for example with braneu, most likely phonological shaped by English "brown".

I'd like to welcome Jack Bevolo to Talossa. For those who may not be aware, he is the only currently enrolled student at the University of Talossa as a non-resident alien on a student visa with permission of myself in my dual roles as President of the University of Talossa as well as Prime Minister of the Kingdom.
