Hey there, and congratulations! This is a wonderful development, and I am sure things will just get better. I had two questions though:
After reunionisation, will the Republic redirect talossa.com and talossa.org to kingdomoftalossa.net?
Will the archives of the private board that non-citizens aren't permitted to see ever be opened, or will they be sealed forever? I admit to significant curiosity, both personal and historical.

Hey there, and congratulations! This is a wonderful development, and I am sure things will just get better. I had two questions though: After reunionisation, will the Republic redirect talossa.com and talossa.org to kingdomoftalossa.net? Exactly what will happen to the domains I don't know, but we have discussed it and have a majority agreement on putting them under the control of His Majesty's Government. Will the archives of the private board that non-citizens aren't permitted to see ever be opened, or will they be sealed forever? I admit to significant curiosity, both personal and historical. That we have not discussed. I hadn't even thought about it yet. It's complicated. On the one hand, that board does belong to our common history and would be of much interest to historians and of course to the merely curious. On the other hand, everything was posted there with the explicit assumption that it would stay secret. We can't just open it like that. As you can imagine, it contains whining, strategy discussions regarding inter-Talossan relations, venting, personal details the posters don't want to share for privacy reasons - photos etc, negative comments about ex-citizens and other micronations, etc. Some of it could be made public directly, some after a cooling-off period of a couple of years, some of it never. Difficult matter. But it needs to be discussed.

My fellow Republicans are often ignoring the question, how the forums shall be archived, technically. Depending on the method, it might be impossible to retrieve the debates from the privat / half private subforums (for instance, if an "off-line reader" is used for the backup).
A way to fix this problem would be to make the hidden forums world-readable, which IMHO is not a good idea, since we've been talking about some really private things there (death of parents or other family members, lost love and so on - this is sensible private stuff that is not meant to be published).

How big is this secret forum? Would it be feasible to appoint someone (or a team of someones) to run through it with a big black marker and edit it for public consumption?

I totally agree! I think opening those archives would cause unrest and tantrums among those concerned and seriously stain several people´s public image.

How big is this secret forum? Would it be feasible to appoint someone (or a team of someones) to run through it with a big black marker and edit it for public consumption? 3687 posts in 383 topics. Doing it topic by topic would probably be enough, so it's not that much. It's mostly a technical problem I guess: edit it how? Export the "okay'd" content how? I think opening those archives would cause unrest and tantrums among those concerned and seriously stain several people´s public image. Nah, I don't think so. Whining and venting is whining and venting. We all know that, we all do it, in private email, to our partners at the breakfast table. A lot is said and thought that is not that seriously meant. It's more a question of morality, we whined and vented knowing it wouldn't be public. And then the personal stuff that Dieter mentioned, where people talk about personal problems, love, grief and stuff. Anyhow, this is all of it tied with the technical question: How do we archive any of the Republic's forums? We need to solve that question first.

Browsing through the forum, I'd say that the overwhelming majority of topics deal with stuff like our domains expiring, people apologising, taking each other to task for being too aggressive in the open forum, sharing personal addresses and photos, census reports etc. The rants are a small minority of the topics. A lot of the stuff are things I can't tell why they were written in the hidden forum. Because people felt more protected there, I guess. There even used to be a stickied post saying "Don't use this forum unnecessarily!" because people tended to write stuff there that should have been posted in the open forums.

Anyway all of this was written under the assumption that only citizens of the Republic can read it. I don't think that this level of privacy can be changed by an ex-post majority decision. Literally everyone who has ever been entitled to post there had to be asked for their assent, including those who are long gone.
To make a long story short, I believe that privacy is privacy and should remain privacy and therefore protected, especially in this internet age where depriving a whole bunch of people of their privacy is but a matter of a mouseclick, and based on this, I herewith politely refuse to grant my assent.

What if the forums' permissions were made to be similar to the Kingdom's Immigration, Chat Room, and Talossan Names boards? Only those with current log in permission would be able to view?
This way it is "easily" archived and at the same time, it stays out of public view.

I too would like to politely state that my assent also will not be given. Things said in that forum were said in confidence and it would be unfair to betray that now.

As for archiving the forum database with the SMF forum's built-in backup method, people should be aware of two facts:
a) for easy access, the forum software is needed to read the database; b) anyway, the database is human readable, not encrypted in any way. In plain English this is to say, your "private messages" are archived and readable, too.
Now decide how happy you will be with the idea of an archived database.
(Btw., I didn't read that stuff, thanks for asking; I only had to examine the structure and the format of the database for the tweaking that was necessary to transfer the stuff from Andy's to our new host.)

Of course this is a lie (not what you said, the thing that I said). It must have been a while since I "friended" you on Facebook, and a long while ago you tried to start a chat, but I had been away from the computer when it happened... so that has been a missed opportunity to get to know you, I suppose.
