Just in time for the Feast of the Annunciation which is its theme, I have put my original Talossan-language Christmas carol "In Nazareþ" onto the nation's Website. And yes, it comes complete with an MP3 in which yours truly audibly murders his own creation. Check it out, if you have earplugs or a strong stomach, on this page of our nation's Website. Hooligan

(refrain)
For us in need in hay he lays: Pious favoured surroundings; So who could not return our Lover's love?
(refrain)
Star-led wise men, worship Christ: Gold, frankincense, and myrrh, give your offerings; The newborn Jesus offers His heart.
(refrain) |
One thing for the interested student of Talossan to note is that I have chosen to go away from the meaning of the original latin venite (= 'come ye') and use the Talossan verb venerarh to make veneretz there, meaning "worship ye". The reason for this change is that although Talossan does have a verb that formed directly from the Latin venerare (= "to come"), and that verb is viénarh, this verb no longer has that meaning, and in fact Talossan has no verb meaning specifically "to come". Instead that meaning has been subsumed into the verb irh, which was originally "to go" and which now is called "the verb of motion" because it means either "to come" or "to go", depending on context, or, in fact, simply means "to move or change locations", the Talossan mind kind of losing the whole distinction between "coming" and "going" that Latin and other languages enforce. Instead, viénarh has shifted meaning to where it is used to indicate "about to" and "just (did)". For this same reason, the venite in the refrain became vetz-voi (a form of the verb of motion) instead of the direct translation into the Talossan verb viénarh whose meaning has shifted.

Just a simple question. Why don't you have used a form of the verb of motion also for the exhortation to come in Bethlehem as you did in the refrain?

Just a simple question. Why don't you have used a form of the verb of motion also for the exhortation to come in Bethlehem as you did in the refrain? Only for reasons of metre, as I felt that va or vetz ("go/come!") and even va-voi or vetz-voi ("go/come ye!"), being fewer than three syllables, did not match as well to the Latin venite, so I believed that the initial verse "sings better" using veneretz. In the refrain, though, I thought that vetz-voi worked since it is followed by qe. So vetz-voi qe ("go/come ye [so] that"), I felt, matches the metre of the Latin venite. Thanks for asking!

This year, with the assistance of David Huisman, I have translated a traditional Catalan carol: Fum, Fum, Fum (or "El Vint-e-Cinc de Desembre"). This is a very old carol (about 500 years) and appears in many different versions, but for the most part I've followed the version David grew up with. TRANSLATION NOTE: The Catalan carol has the little shepherds eating "ous i botifarra" -- eggs and a traditional Catalan sausage. For the Talossan version I have substituted amergaz (or merguez) -- a traditional Berber sausage! EDIT: Added Catalan lyrics.

Some time ago in this thread, Lord Hooligan translated the carol "Angels We Have Heard on High." Now I've prepared another Talossan version based on the original French carol, "les anges dans nos campagnes" ("the angels in our fields"). Els Áinxhells dal Campagna Els áinxhells dal campagna Cantent çéu se chirluscha Es el sintzour dal montagna Rezireva aceasta curfa Gloria in excelsis Déo! (bis)
Pastours, perqet aceasta feschta? Qet'st l'obxhect dal cantaziun? Qualsevol víncitex eda devic'hta Merita aceasta xhuvilaziun Gloria in excelsis Déo! (bis)
Gloria in excelsis Déo! (bis)
Il est né, le Dieu de gloire Terre, tressaille de bonheur Que tes hymnes de victoire Chantent, célèbrent ton sauveur ! Gloria in excelsis Déo! (bis)
