German 101
“He who is ignorant of other languages is ignorant of his own.”
–Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Introduction:
This ten week course is intended to teach the basic topics of the German langauge. German, one of the official languages of the European Union and among the most widely spoken and well known languages in all of Europe, is found in the field of political science (remember Realpolitik?) and psychology (Sigmund Freud). German speaking peoples are among the most widely known in the world, John Calvin from Switzerland was a Reformation leader, as well as the German Martin Luther, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is one of the best known authors of the Romanticism movement, and German musicians such as Beethoven and Wagner have had a lasting impression on modern society.
Course Intention:
This course will teach you the basics to reading and writing the German language, and with pronunciation help, speaking it. Although this will be a text based class, listening assignments will be assigned to compliment topics already discussed in class. Writing activities will be held in both English and German, covering a variety of topics from German grammar structure to the cultures of German speaking peoples.
Grading:
General homework assignments will make up 40% and projects 10%. Quizzes will be held on certain weeks and will make up 20% of your semester grade. The final exam and midterm will be 30% of your semester grade. Weekly participation grades will be entered at the culmination of each week and will be based off of participation in discussion threads as well as any personal questions brought to me via email, AIM, other forms of communication. The grading system is as follows: 100-90% A, 89-80% B, 79-75% C, 74-70% D, 69% or lower F.
Absent Policy:
Due to the fact that this is a summer course, I understand the time constraints of those who lead a very busy life. Due to this fact, one day missed means you have one day to make up the homework or quiz to a maximum of 5 extra days from the day you return.
Late Work Policy:
Late work will not be tolerated and students will receive a zero for any and all late assignments, projects, quizzes, and final exams. All assignments must be PMed or emailed to me by 12:00am on the start of the next week.
Cheating Policy:
There is a STRICT rule of not discussing quizzes or tests with other students where I can see or get word of it. This means no discussing the quiz on Witt even if you’ve turned it in.
Honor System for use of Online Translators:
The use of online translators is forbidden, as you do not learn from it. However, I do not know you use online translators if you do so I TRUST that you WILL NOT use them. If it is clear that you are using a translator, you will receive a zero on the assignment.
Credits:
This course will be worth three credits from if you complete the work to my satisfaction and pass the class.
Continued Education:
If enough people pass this class, I will be offering German II. Students are also encouraged to participate in Die Deutsche Sprache Kameradschaft here in Talossa as well as out of class supplementation through books, websites, or other sources.
Course Materials:
I recommend the Harper Collins German Concise Dictionary for this class as it has nearly 200,000 translations and a grammar section in the back. Google translators and other translation websites are NOT to be used. I will post reliable online German dictionaries when the class starts for student use.
