Though I do not happen to reside in the province of Mussolini, I do serve this province in the capacity of Senator. It seems fitting then that I bring up this matter: the naming of your province. A question for all and sundry--the former being the two active citizens of this province and the latter any others that might happen to be hanging around: do you think the name of your province should be changed? If the answer to this is yes, then do you have any suggestions? It seems to me that if honor is to be given to anyone in the name of our province it ought to be someone worthier. As of now the only alternative I have heard was when Lord Lauriér called it Benito.
Sincerely,
Senatôr Nic Casálmac'h

The suggestion of Benito is a good one. I could stand to live in the Province of Benito. I humbly propose the Province of Padua. Padua is pretty great, Venice is there, St. Anthony is from there. Not to mention, it doesn't sound overly ethnic, which is a good thing.

From the "sundry" category, first, the cranky Talossan conservative perspective: Change, bad! Tradition, good! Okay, now that I have that out of my system -- I like Benito, too. It keeps a connection with the old province name, and also honours the boy king who founded our nation. Count Lauriéir picked a good one. A number of other alternatives with strong roots in Talossan history or culture have also been suggested. My next favorite is Sir Trotxâ of Vuode's: Lombardi, after the legendary coach of the Florenciâ Packers. I threw out some options like Juneau (after the founder of East Milwaukee), Juba (Berber King of Numidia), and (groan) Estefania (after our National Entertainer). One factor you may wish to consider is maintaining Mussolini's alphabetical position in the list of provinces. Some alternatives meeting that criterion: Nutzlandeu, after King Otto, "circus entertainer and one-time King of Albania" (a very Talossan-spirited guy). Numidia, after the Berber kingdom ruled by Juba. Or Masinissa, after the first king of Numidia, and Scipio's right-hand man at the Battle of Zama (against Hannibal in Tunisia, 202 BC). His Berber cavalry kicked the Carthaginians' rumps.

Might I also recommend Neville. What can I say? Neville Chamberlain rocks. OR, if you prefer, it can pay homage to Wendell Cushing Neville, former Marine Corps Commandant and Medal of Honor recipient to our friends in the US. Medal of Honor also rocks.
Let's check out the list thus far...
Benito Lombardi Masinissa Neville Nutzlandeu Numidia Padua
Unofficial Poll, let's chop that list down to three solid names. From there we can limit it to one.
Citizens of Mussolini, post your top three.
I vote for Padua, Masinissa and Lombardi.

If it will change at all(which I'm still a little iffy about) I would put these in my top 3:
Lombardi
Benito (well, I'm not so sure that solves any problems, but it sounds cool!)
Gasperi (first prime minister of Italy elected democratically with universal suffrage)- Keeps with the prime-ministers-of-Italy theme, but with a more positive connotation

It is my (off the record) opinion that if you do decide to rename the Province, you'll have to amend an act.
Specifically, Talossan Statute 34RZ9 10a, 10b and 10c specify what happens when a province is closed to immigration, and the order of provinces that the incoming immigrant is assigned to.
(Pardon my dangling participle, it's late.)
But you guys already knew that, right?

Mick, thanks for the FYI. I suppose my concern is whether we want to change it at all. But, I figure we should probably work out a name and then we can say "Should we change from Mussolini to [insert name here]" rather than "Should we change the name from Mussolini to whatever."

Actually, you may not have to amend anything.
It's rather vague...even downright murky, if you will have to do anything if/when you change the name.
Don't mind me, I'm new here.

If we choose to move forward with the proposal I suggest we conduct a provincial referendum(I'd be happy to supervise).
The question could be posed similar to in a recall election, where the first question is "Would you like to change the name of the Mussolini Province?" then the second would be "If yes, indicate your choice..."
We should probably pare down the list to be submitted to the population a little, seeing as there really aren't that many votes to go around.
As for Organically changing the name(*ponders something, mumbles under his breath, then brings his head up with a big smile on his face*).... my colleague S:reu Preston will be more than happy to field your questions!

That seems like a good idea. It also shouldn't be too hard: "Mas..." through "Vun...".
That was my thinking also.

This thread has been idle for a while, but I thought I'd point out that Pavarotti is another Italian name which would fit into Mussolini's place in an alphabetical list of provinces.

I still like Benito, but Pavarotti would be a fitting tribute.

We sure have had a lot of talk about changing the name of this province. Nothing ever gets proposed legislatively though (hint hint hint hint hint hint). Were I a Mussolinian myself (Hail Florenciâ!), I would try to push this ball a little harder and faster. As it stands, I will simply post into your board, an uninvited guest.
