Now is the time for all good Men to come to the aid of our Province! As every cestoûr knows, the motto of Vuode Province is Hic Habitat Rex! or The King Lives Here. Of course, right now the King (The Real King) divides his time between his palatial compounds in Centennial Colorado and Mancos Colorado. This leaves our poor province our in the cold. So what to do? We could consider kidnapping His Majesty, but that probably won't work. Smuggling HRH back to the homeland would be hard to pull off because of all the guys in tiny hats and baggy red pants clustered around his august self. The next best thing to HRH in person would be to have a statue of HRH mounted prominently on a pedestal at a major intersection of our province. But the trouble there is where to find an appropriately dressed likeness to mount there. A take-off of Michelangelo's David would not be appropriate, nor would a Bernini piece showing the King on the shoulders of Prince Patch. No, we need something that shows the King to be the Renaissance man whom he really is. Fortunately for us, the good people of Newport News Virginia have erected a fair likeness of His Highness King John in their city. Here is a view of this mighty figure, as presented by sculptor Jon Hair: Gentlemen of Vuode, I propose a bold action. I say we obtain (by means which need not be looked into too closely) this fine piece of cast brass, and transport it to our province, to be displayed in a prominent location. (Someplace overlooking La Mar Talossan would be grand.) What say ye? Sir T

or we could just change our motto...
How about either:
Provincia Prima The First Province
Cubiculum Beni Ben's Bedroom
Hic Habitavit Rex! The King Lived Here!

Sorry to interrupt, but the last one would actually be "hic habitabant rex" as the King's stay was a) continuous and b) incomplete.

sorry Enríc, actually it's Habitavit because unlike Spanish the past (Perfect) and imperfect have two seperate translations
Perfect - He lived, He has lived Imperfect - He used to live, He was living

Sorry to interrupt, but the last one would actually be "hic habitabant rex" as the King's stay was a) continuous and b) incomplete. Why not perfect? With habitavit, you're saying that at present Vuode is the place where the King lived once, but doesn't any more. Like in the Vulgate in Genesis 50: Joseph "habitavit in Aegypto" (lived in Egypt). But you'd have to use habitabant if you wanted to say "Joseph was living in Egypt when (something happened)."

As a Florenciân, I have no real voice here, but man, it sure would be cool if that statue were in Vuode. I could promise (I think) that Florenciâns would flock to Vuode for a look at that wondrous thing, thus pumping up your provincial economy. Heck, inscribe your provincial motto (whatever it might be) on the base, but I think Sir Trotxâ has an excellent (albeit completely impossible) plan there.

But with the imperfect, you're implying that the King lived there for quite a time period, but it was interupted by some other event.
To take another example: Gaius claudebant ianuam, ubi mater, "noli claude ianuam," dixit.
We use the imperfect because Gaius tried to shut the door but was interrupted by his Mum. I don't see how this is different. The King used to live here but stopped.

My understanding is that the imperfect is used here because the emphasis is on the interruption of the action, at a point in time when the action was ongoing. You wouldn't normally use the imperfect if you don't intend to mention the intervening event at all. It'd be like saying "Gaius was closing the door" in English. It automatically focuses your mind on the question "and then what happened?"

Enríc, you may be confusing Latin with Spanish or another language. In Latin the Imperfect and Perfect have completely different and set translations

Ah, I see. So the interruption of the King's stay in the province is like its completion. The imperfect is more to provide context. That makes sense.
Although it's kind of negative to have a motto which essentially says that the King one lived here but moved away.
