Brethren - I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our province. These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their province; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us: that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. The fight in Vuode for equal rights rages on. It is only fitting that in the same week as the anniversary of the certification of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to our neighbor USA's Constitution (26 August 1920), that the Men of Vuode stand forth to propose our own Bill of Male Rights as amendments to our Provincial By-laws. Our list of enumerated rights is below, waiting for the comments of the good men and women of Talossa. We of Vuode offer this not as a plea from ignorance, but because we hold a decent respect to the opinions of mankind (and womankind). We ask now for your thoughts and prayers as we struggle to right the many millions of minutes of injustice perpetrated on one sex by another. We have promised freedom, and now we must deliver. When we allow freedom to ring from every canton and every province, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, believers and agnostics, Jews and Gentiles, Methodists, Baptists and Catholics, male AND female - all will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Gospel spiritual, "Free at last! free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!" We await your comments. Trotxâ
A Declaration of the Rights of Men in Vuode We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all men are created equal, that we are endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among women and men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That to protect one sex from complete and total domination by another, the men of Vuode Province express a desire, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that the following declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added to the By-Laws of our Fair Province. And as extending the ground of public confidence in the Government, this measure will best ensure the beneficent ends of its institution.
Article I: The States-General shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech or of the press or of cable TV stations that just might happen to feature voluptuous starlets; or compromising the right of men to peaceably assemble with the guys without having women around; or prohibiting the free worship of the sports teams, sports cars, electronic gizmos, power tools or super-models of our choice.
Article II: A well-practiced Militia being necessary to the security of a free Province, the rights of to keep and bear Arms (including everything from slings, spears, bows & arrows and sabres, to M-80's and pop-bottle rockets, up to and including crew-served weapons, self-propelled artillery and American-made fighter-planes) shall not be infringed, but mandated.
Article III: No mothers-in-law shall be quartered in any house, without the consent of the male owner or renter.
Article IV: The right of men to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches, seizures and/or donations to Goodwill or the Salvation Army, shall not be violated.
Article V: No man shall be held to answer for any crime, or act of omission or commission, unless on a presentment or indictment by hard actual evidence; nor shall any man be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy; nor shall be compelled in any case to be a witness against himself, nor shall hearsay evidence be allowed in domestic disputes, nor shall a man be deprived of wife, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property, without due process of law.
Article VI: In all prosecutions, the accused man shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of his peers, and to be informed (without tears or raised voices) of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defense. The judgments of any mostly-female panel of the prosecutor's girl-friends shall be rendered null and void and shall not apply.
Article VII: In the domestic sphere, the men of Vuode have the right to help decide how often things need to be cleaned, and how clean they need to be. We have the right to do whatever jobs are given us our own way. We have the right to have our say about how we decorate our homes and arrange our furniture, even if we may not be very good at it. We have the right to have our tools left alone and not messed with by spouses, progeny or neighbors.
Article VIII: Excessive apologies shall not be required, nor excessive fines or celibacy imposed, nor expensive jewelry or clothing demanded, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted, as conditions of forgiveness if the man is indeed found wrong.
Article IX: The enumeration of certain rights shall not be construed to deny or disparage other rights retained by men.
Article X: The powers not delegated to the women of Vuode, nor prohibited them by the Organic Law, are reserved to men respectively. And Whereas it hath pleased the Great Governour of the World to incline the hearts of the Ladies of Vuode (to whom we owe so much) towards our cause, we respectively ask the States-General to approve of, and to authorize us to ratify the said Declaration of the Rights of Men in Vuode. Know Ye that we the undersigned men, by virtue of the power and authority to us given for that purpose, do by these presents, in the name and in behalf of our respective constituents, fully and entirely ratify and confirm each and every one of the said Articles of Declaration of the Rights of Men in Vuode, and all and singular the matters and things therein contained: And we do further solemnly pledge and engage the faith of our constituents, both male and female, that they shall abide by the determinations of the States-General assembled, on all questions, which by the said Articles are submitted to them. And that these Articles thereof shall be inviolably observed by the Cantons we respectively represent, we hereby pledge, so help us God.

All due respect, but women still make seventy-seven cents for the same work that pays a man a dollar. And a recent Harvard Business School study showed that women got worse jobs after graduation, even though they had higher grades and more internships on average.
Men are still pretty far from needing activism.

The United States Equal Pay Act of 1963 mandates equal pay for equal work. Violating this is a Federal crime. 2. Every major employer in the USA is required to file an EEO(1) form with the EEOC. These reports include a jobs report where employees are grouped by function, with the list broken down by race and gender. Employers offering unequal wages are subject to penalties ranging from fines to prison time. (Check with your HR department or the Dept. of Labor if you don't believe this.) 3. Consider the economics of this statement. If an employer could save 1/4 of the cost of labor (the primary cost of most businesses) why would any intelligent business owner bother to hire men? Exceeding lies and damn lies, the breezy and inaccurate statistic you quoted comes from a study by the US Census Bureau (NOT the Dept. of Labor). The x% amount come by calculating an across-the-board comparison of earnings by year-round full-time workers. Basically, the Census Bureau adds up the monies earned by all the women, and compares it to the total of the monies earned by all the men. Although often quoted just as you stated, this statistic never looked at individual jobs, nor does it prove that a job that pays a man a dollar only pays a woman 75.3 cents (note the correct 2003 number). The total salary numbers by gender are different, and probably always will be, because in aggregate, women pick different careers. Women tend to choose jobs that offer more scheduling flexibility, less travel and less danger, and as a group, women tend to work less overtime. Another factor is that less than 30% of the college graduates with engineering degrees are female. At any one time, more men are working full-time than women. (We won't go into the mechanics of how that Bill Gates guy personally screws up these numbers.) These factors, and several others related to choice, make the Census Bureau's numbers unequal. A correlation to this can be found in the fact that an overwhelming number of the annual workplace fatalities are male, (see OSHA), and men injured on the job make up a majority of the workman's compensation claims (IBID). There is still a link between risk and reward. So - to summarize: - It is illegal and immoral to discriminate on sex and offer different pay for the same work.
- Plaintiff's lawyers love to find companies that discriminate on gender, but the number of these problems is small.
- This statistic doesn't report what you claim.
- Good reasons exist for why all the full-time working men together make more money than all the full time working women.
It is time for everyone to dump this simplistic and misleading quotation. However, it has usually been hard to apply this in individual cases, as anyone trying to sue has to prove objectively that they are performing equal work (i.e. are of equal value), something easy to establish in a factory but almost impossible in an office. Well, that's not actually true. Only businesses employing more than a hundred employees or with $50k in federal contracts have to file an EEO-1. But small businesses represent 99.7% of all American businesses and employ 45% of the total payroll. That's almost half the country not reporting until they are sued, and they include most of the higher-educated employees whose performance is hard to quantify (but appears consistently less than men), such as lawyers. And if they had solved the problem, then the EEOC probably wouldn't have collected $99.1 million in fines last year for sexual discrimination, a number which has remained fairly consistent. 3. Consider the economics of this statement. If an employer could save 1/4 of the cost of labor (the primary cost of most businesses) why would any intelligent business owner bother to hire men? I agree that the numbers are not exact, and those factors you mention such as a tendency to emphasize flexible hours, mitigate the difference. However, it does not seem to me as though those factors sufficiently explain the discrepancy, which at 25% is very large. And no study of the wage gap has ever found it nonexistent, just of varying size. There are other problems, for example, such as the fact that part-time workers are not included in the statistics, so their mitigation is not there. A correlation to this can be found in the fact that an overwhelming number of the annual workplace fatalities are male, (see OSHA), and men injured on the job make up a majority of the workman's compensation claims (IBID). There is still a link between risk and reward. Except that there is no link there, since the most dangerous jobs are also usually the most low-paying, something confirmed by DoL stats. At the moment (the "Please, Release Me!" Act, which is currently in the Hopper for dicussion, would allow the province to change this), Vuode, like all provinces, holds its elections coincident with the national election to the Senäts and Cosâ, and the next scheduled election runs from 15 December of this year until 14 January of the next.
