"Meme" is mème in French, meme in Italian and Spanish and memă in Romanian, and they're all borrowed from English.
I'm wanting to say, then, that the Talossan translation should either be "el mem" or "la mema". Personally, I'm more inclined toward "mema". Any input?

In Spanish and Italian meme is masculine. For me it'd be more natural _el mem_ (if that spelling is right). In other words, _la mema_ sounds unnatural and... ugly.

The reason I think mema is better is because every one of those translations has a trailing vowel, so it seems more appropriate for Talossan's translation to have that, too.

The word for "meme" is always based on the word for "gene" (Fr. gène > mème, It/Sp. gene > meme, Ro. genă > memă)
Following that pattern, the Talossan word for meme would be "meme" (< Ta. gene).

The word for "meme" is always based on the word for "gene" ([...] It/Sp. gene > meme [...]) It's gen in Spanish, and still meme.

The word for "meme" is always based on the word for "gene" ([...] It/Sp. gene > meme [...]) It's gen in Spanish, and still meme. Huh. I couldve sworn that "gene" is a synonym. In any case, I stand corrected.

The word for "meme" is always based on the word for "gene" ([...] It/Sp. gene > meme [...]) It's gen in Spanish, and still meme. Then that's a translation that came about spontaneously and didn't take the etymology of the word into consideration. As Wikipedia notes, "The word meme is a shortening (modeled on gene) of mimeme (from Ancient Greek μίμημα pronounced [míːmɛːma] mīmēma, "imitated thing", from μιμεῖσθαι mimeisthai, "to imitate", from μῖμος mimos, "mime")[15] coined by British evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in The Selfish Gene (1976)".
