As you may know, the King would probably declare that an unconstitutional violation of his prerogatives and I'd get sent to the Tower or some such.

An update: the Prime Ministry has appointed Lüc da Schir, on a temporary basis, as administrator/fixer-upper of the National Webspace. His top priority right now is setting up a New Wittenberg. Lüc says he has fully archived kingdomoftalossa.net, and that therefore it will go offline shortly. Unfortunately for the glheþ community, this also means l'Overstéir will go offline, until it can be re-established on talossa.com,

Exciting, also slightly worrying with the Översteir.

Exciting, also slightly worrying with the Översteir. It's just a matter of time and priorities. Since Lüc now has all the backups, I suppose if anyone else wanted to set up l'Overstéir on their own server, they could ask Lüc for the necessary data.

How far away from migrating forums are we?

How far away from migrating forums are we? It is my belief that we should migrate to NewWitt after OldWitt has been archived. This can only happen after we pay for a ProBoards Premium account which includes archiving privileges. There is no money in the current Budget for that. Therefore: after the next Budget.

Proboards has changed their policy and no longer offers any archiving or backup function, so far as I can tell. As a personal project, I have been exploring options for this. I have been running HTTrack for about two weeks, grabbing html files first. It's extremely slow because I can only grab one file a second, since I need to avoid being blocked by Proboards.

Oy. Absolutely time to ditch this Witt, then. ProBoards just lost a customer.
Thanks for you work on this, Alexandreu! Please keep me apprised.

AD, could this thing be made to work on a Mac? I see something called 'Mac Ports'.

If there's an iOS version, then yes. I would recommend you not try to rip the forum though, unless you know what you're doing. If Proboards detects it, they'll ban your IP.

There's one other thing that could help here.
Apparently, every individual user can download an archive of their own posts/threads and PMs. It just can't be done collectively for the whole forum.
I'm wondering how difficult it would be if we all did this, forwarded the files to a team of compilers who then tried to piece them back together?
Not every registered user will do it, but how much work would it save if the vast majority of current day active posters did it?

Could you get around this using a VPN? I thought of that and did trial runs with two services, but neither worked. I don't know why, but I just couldn't connect to the server. My technical chops might just not be up to the task. It's a shame, because this whole thing could be done in a couple of days if I could do 20 simultaneous connections or whatever.

I haven't tried this, so I don't know what form in which they'd be delivered. The mirror I am building essentially looks exactly like Witt does right now, and it can be navigated in the same way. It just does not include the private forums. Manually integrating a dozen or more private compositions of posts into the existing form structure would take a very long time. We're talking about 165,000 posts. We've been at this a long time here and yammer at each other a lot! Maybe we should do it anyway, just in case? If something were to go wrong, better to have that than nothing. It would only be a fraction of the whole (I'm one of the most prolific posters and I only have about 5% of the total posts) but any fraction would be better than zero!
