What has struck me is that even post-1923 Turkish includes so many Persian loanwords that if learning the word in one language helps me remember the other one. Like, it was much easier for me to remember what تجارت meant after I found out that ticaret means the same thing. And of course all the Islamic religious words are pretty much the same, so I can even recognize those in Arabic these days.

Is it Persian loanwords or do they have common loanwords from Arabic? That's an excellent question! I believe - though I'm not an expert - that it is the first version. The ancestors of the Turks came from Central Asia which was part of the Persian cultural sphere, and so they were influenced by Persian culture before they were converted to Islam and thus direct Arabic influence. For example, Turkish kahve comes through Persian qahve rather than directly from Arabic qahwah ("coffee"). As far as I can tell, Ottoman Turkish was probably more like Farsi than like modern Turkish. Something similar happened with the Mughals, who were originally a Turkic-speaking people, but by the time they conquered India were Persian-speaking, and ended up speaking "Hindi with a heavy Persian/Arabic influence", i.e. Urdu. |

Bear in mind that I cannot teach you much Maltese for lack of proficiency, and teaching learning Turkish will require much work and dedication!
But I am up for it if you are!
