Hello everyone, as a prospective and a former citizen, I can see the reason for suggesting this, but I fear it might make the Kingdom a little like a game.
Elections work as a way of encouraging activity because (1) they matter (2) they are relatively frequent and (3) parties enable many people to get involved.
If we want to encourage activity in cultural, journalistic, linguistic etc. endeavours, could there be a regular cycle of journalism awards, "Booker Prize", Oscars, Grammys (Talossan equivalents of course)?
They could work on a similar 6 monthly cycle, but on different months to keep activity flowing. They would be newsworthy in themselves.
Just a thought.

... people will start doing stuff (usually easy-scorers) merely to outscore others, not of genuine interest or love for the country. It's a substitute of motivation. This. THIS! This is exactly how I treated the memrise course a while back. I rattled those courses over and over just to get myself to the top of the score table, not because I wanted to be amazingly fluent in Talossan. After a while, I lost interest in my meaningless internet points and stopped taking the course. I didn't actually do any real learning and I've since forgotten whatever I did memorise. Coincidentally, Collecting micronational badges has historically been opposed in this country, and it's probably because it leads to situations like this.

I don't have a direct link just now, but the courses are available forever.

Yes! I don't have a direct link just now, but the courses are available forever. Yes indeed. In fact I had to make a bunch of (behind the scenes) changes to the courses recently because Memrise changed how their system worked a few months back without telling anyone. Hopefully they're working as intended now.

The points system is an interesting idea, for sure, but I agree with those that feel like it'd make Talossa seem like a game, and less like an actual country.
As a (relatively) new citizen who was inactive for a bit, it's a bit difficult for new folks to figure out what to do after they're granted citizenship. The University is dead, most provincial boards are relatively inactive... it's just hard to figure out how to get involved. Maybe some work on cultural things, like the newspaper that was mentioned earlier or language related activity, could go a long way in increasing more permanent activity around here.

One thing that will help will be a real site for the Royal Archives. This site will not be up for a good while yet while I get my holdings organized and while this forum is (very slowly) being archived. GV

And by that, I mean updating the TalossaWiki site.
