A few caveats before I make the offer: - This course's availability would depend on me being able to enlist at least one other attorney to teach one or two of the lectures.
- My own law practice has been successful, but I am a teacher by trade - I don't practice law professionally in my day job.
- I have to check with the Royal Talossan Bar to see what is required to be an approved course of law.
But with that out of the way, I am considering offering a law course, to train and educate new Talossan lawyers. Our legal system is in the best order it has ever been, but it could stand to be improved - and to do that, we need more lawyers. Plus, it can only help the country to have more people familiar with the law. By way of qualifications, I can say that I have been practicing law in Talossa for a couple of years now. I have led or participated in three cases, with one success, one in progress, and one on appeal (which I anticipate success in). I know the law fairly well, since I have been an active legislator for a long time now and I was the sole sponsor and primary author of the Talossan legal code, el Lexhatx. I've also had the great benefit of observing and speaking with some of our most skilled attorneys, and have learned from their examples. With all of that said, I hope to teach a class on Talossan law. If there is interest, I will speak with the Bar about approval of the course, but the syllabus I was considering was as follows, with one lecture per month. -The Organic Law -The Covenant -El Lexhatx -The Wisconsin Criminal and Civil Code -Criminal complaints -Civil torts -Trial procedure Please let me know here if you would definitely be interested and would have the time to undertake a seven-month course of study. I would hate to write the whole first lecture, and then end up having to cancel the program since only two people showed up.

If the Royal Talossan Bar says this is an ok course, I'd be willing to help you out. It might be interesting to get the point of view of a practicing attorney and one who has been (and might be again) a judge (also a practicing attorney).

I'd love the assistance! Although we'd need more than one student, first :S

Is there an age or citizenship length requirement to be trained as a lawyer? I would love to, but I have only been a Talossan for a week. The course sounds interesting though

No such requirements - the Bar only requires you to pass the exam, pretty much.

Hmm... three now. Okay, if we get one more, I'll start writing lectures and contact Dame Litz about sanctioning.

Preliminary, pending approval of the Universita and the Chancellor. The Practice of Civil and Criminal Law This course is intended as an overview of the Talossan legal and judicial system, covering the fundamentals and preparing students for whatever field of specialization most appeals. The finer details of legislation, contracts, civil torts, criminal complaints, and ethics will require further study to master, but all aspects of Talossan law as it is practiced will be discussed. It is expected that, after this course, you will be prepared to take the exam to enter the Royal Talossan Bar, if you so choose, and become a practicing attorney. Myself and other practicing lawyers will be taking significant time out of our lives and other duties to prepare lectures and answer questions. It is expected that you will honour that commitment by keeping to your own. Read the lectures, do the assignments, and reply promptly. Do not enroll in the course if you do not intend to fulfill the associated obligations. Failure to complete the course not only means that you will not be sanctioned to attempt the Bar exam, but it also means that you may not be welcome in any future courses, either. Course materials will include the body of current Talossan law (the Organic Law and el Lexhatx), the PDF archives and wiki archives of older statutory law and the repealed House Law, past cort cases of the Cort pu Inalt and Magistracy, decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court, proceedings from Wisconsin district courts, works by T.M. Asmourescu and myself, the formal procedures of the Cort pu Inalt, other online legal resources, and lectures written by Talossan attorneys specifically for this course. Each unit will run for two weeks, during which time you will be expected to read the assigned material, ask any questions, and complete your written assignment. You will receive one written assignment per unit, and your final grade will be an average of these assignments. We will be lenient graders, but you must get your work done. Do not hesitate to ask questions or otherwise comment - a lively discussion would be ideal. The law in Talossa has been inconsistent and occasionally clumsy in application of principles... it is still young. We should expect to not only learn about it, but help shape its future through our work here. This outline is subject to alteration without notice, based on feedback from the Royal Talossan Bar, course lecturers, and events. Commentary and guidance from current or past members of the judiciary is welcome, although courtesy would be appreciated. Unit One. Basic Principles of Law: a very brief discussion of a huge subject. Adversarial. Common law. Law and precedent. Unit Two. The Organic Law. History. Text. Covenant of Rights and Freedoms. Unit Three. El Lexhatx. Statutes. Legislation. History. Titles and sections. Unit Four. Civil and Criminal Code of Wisconsin. Freezing. Provisions. Future. Unit Five. Precedent. Controlling. Tests. Ad hoc cases. Modern cases. Cort pu Inalt. Magistracy. Future. Unit Six. Writing a Brief. Invitation. Invocation. Background. Arguments. Unit Seven. Civil Torts. Standing. Format. Damages. Unit Eight. Civil Cortroom Procedure. Settlement. Initial brief. Motions. Response. Further briefs. Amicus curiae. Resolution. Appeals. Unit Nine. Criminal Complaints. Roman prosecution. Format. Future. Unit Ten. Criminal Cortroom Procedure. Settlement. Initial complaint. Plea. Motions. Response. Further briefs. Amicus curiae. Sentencing. Appeals. Unit Eleven. Defense. Vigor. Unit Twelve. Ethics and Obligations. Privilege. Advocacy. Obligations of a member of the Bar.
