COURSE SYLLABUS
COURSE NAME: Basic Skills in Seamanship
INSTRUCTOR: Davìu Lundescu
Course Objective:
This Course is designed around the U.S. standards of boating skills and Seamanship, and to aid mariners of Talossa of the skills they may need when out on the water.
At the end of this Course you will be able to:
- Demonstrate proper safety equipment
- Identify and explain the various forms of Aids to Navigation
- Utilize background knowledge and skills required for life on the water
- Understand the various terms used in seamanship
- Etc may be instructed in this course
Course Schedule:
This Course will be taught over a duration of 6 weeks, with a new lecture and assignments arriving one day each week. All students are required to complete and turn in all assignments in order to pass this course.
The topics for each week will be as follows:
Week 1: Introduction to the course, basic seamanship terminology, etc.
Week 2: Types and uses of various vessels, modern terminology, etc.
Week 3: Required items onboard vessels, differences in Flotation devices, etc.
Week 4: Rules of the Road, etc.
Week 5: Aids to Navigation (ATON), etc.
Week 6: In Cases of Emergency procedure (ICE), Basic Charting, Final Exam, Farewells, etc.
Grading:
This Course will be a Pass/Fail course, however, you must make at least 75% grading to pass, each assignment is worth a certain point value. Other than regular assignments, you will have 2 quizzes, and a final exam. The grading structure will look like this:
Assignments: 30% of overall grade
Quizzes: 20% of overall grade
Final Exam: 50% of overall grade
Overall: 100%
