Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben - and this is based on the fact that a major player in the American War for Independence was a homosexual. Oh, and NYC throws a killer Steuben Day parade every year with an awesome biergarten set up in central park.

HAHA. Nicely done! This parade is also called the "German-American friendship parade." It's a lot of fun.

No favourite revolution figure here. But a favourite revolution: The Portuguese Carnation Revolution of '74. Wonderful days indeed. I love the story that the prostitutes in Lisbon organised, chased away their pimps, and offered their services free to revolutionary soldiers. But sad that it didn't push on to full liberation and Portugal ended up as just a "normal" NATO "democracy".

It's got to be Mick Collins for me, the Big Fellow. Mick Collins, like John Lennon, had the good fortune to die while he was young and fashionable. Eamonn de Valera, like Paul McCartney, grew old and boring. But screw 'em both, my favourite Irish rebel is James Connolly.

But anyway no revolution leader turned into a dictator, and the revolution didn't turn into a nightmare with prisons, a new secret police and what not. At least in the 20th century there have been few revolutions that didn't eventually slide down the dictatorship lane, so that's one reason why I still love the Portuguese Revolution of 1974.

But screw 'em both, my favourite Irish rebel is James Connolly. Yes, Connolly was the better man, but Collins was more storybook heroic.

I especially love his poetry about beautiful, shapely young Irishmen. I never paid attention to that - in that wasn't a concern of mine. What I did pay attention to was his speech on 1 August 1915, Pearse gave a now-famous graveside oration at the funeral of the Fenian Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa. It closed with the words: “ Our foes are strong and wise and wary; but, strong and wise and wary as they are, they cannot undo the miracles of God Who ripens in the hearts of young men the seeds sown by the young men of a former generation. And the seeds sown by the young men of '65 and '67 are coming to their miraculous ripening today. Rulers and Defenders of the Realm had need to be wary if they would guard against such processes. Life springs from death; and from the graves of patriot men and women spring living nations. The Defenders of this Realm have worked well in secret and in the open. They think that they have pacified Ireland. They think that they have purchased half of us and intimidated the other half. They think that they have foreseen everything, think that they have provided against everything; but, the fools, the fools, the fools! — They have left us our Fenian dead, and while Ireland holds these graves, Ireland unfree shall never be at peace." I've visited his house, and I've stood in the jail cell where he was held. I've stood at his grave. I care not for his private life. That was between him and whom ever. What I do care about is his love of Ireland, and just how far he would go to prove that.

So... you don't have any issues about his ideology of the "blood sacrifice" or the argument that he led the men of 1916 into a death trap on purpose?
