Would anyone be interested in learning music theory? *I just finished teaching a course on Basic Music Theory at our local community college and would like to open the setting up to our community. If you are interested please tell me the level of musical knowledge you do have so I can set up a course brochure and syllabus for review by the university board. Thanks for any interest.

Do-Re- ME!I'm not sure how to quantify the level of musical knowledge I have, but it's pretty low. Maybe after a few other people join in, I'll have a better idea of where I fall.

Basically what I am talking about is: *Level 0: can not read musical notation *Level 1: Can read in either basic clef: Treble or Bass *Level 2: Know your Circle of Fifths or can play an instrument and can read music. *Level 3: Can identify the major parts of symphony and pull the melodies from it. *Level 4: Can chart the aspects of that said symphony and show how the composer reached each melodic line and transition. *Level 5: you don't need my input.
Most people are in level 0 or 1.

I love music theory. Well, I love music and I love theories, and if the connection is like the connection between numbers (which I love) and number theory (which I love) -- and I suspect it is -- you can count me in, at least for auditing such a cool class.
I'm between level 3 and 4, likely closer to 3, though.

Add "Games Theory", and I'm there.
FYI: I played Concert Violin for 9 years.
For a Philosophy class at the University of Colorado, I compared Eddie van Halen's "Eruption " with Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto.
I am the only documented winner of the Norther Ireland variant of "Diplomacy".
I am such a dweeb.

Put me down. Hopefully, I'm a high 2 now, I guess. I know that S:reu Earnest started his reply with solfege.
I lasted five weeks in Music Theory I in my freshman year in college. The violinist/grad student teaching the class didn't consider vocalists and banjo players to be musicians. My friends who were percussionists and low brass were told the same thing by the same woman. Curiously, we all left.
I'm looking forward to learning what I missed.

I can't read musical notation, but can feebly play guitar a little (strictly 3 chord punk.) Right now I tentatively say I'm in (depends on if I can find the time to participate.) Definately a level 0.

Where did you go to college Sir Trotxâ? That's not a simple question to answer! The music theory class was at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado in 1979. The school had problems (example: they lost their accreditation that year) so I left and started a period of academic wanderlust. It wasn't until later that I learned how credits evaporate during a transfer. Funny thing about the University Registrar - their job is not to let you in, then, once you do manage to fight your way in, their job is not to let you out. Good idea on the theory class. I look forward to enrolling. Trotxâ

By the way, the current Regent of the University of Talossa is quite eager for this class to go forward.

Will have a complete Syllabus by the middle of next week. Judging by the responces I'd better start at the basics and work up from there. ***Question to "students"*** Would you rather I do a 6 week introduction course and than a more advanced course or lump everything together?

Speaking for myself, I would not at all mind an introduction to be sure I am well-grounded.

With your permission, I shall look in from time to time - but not as a formal student (I'm about 4.5 in your list: I have played the piano for over 60years, the organ and violin for over 50, taught music - at an amateur level - for decades, and conducted several choirs... one of them professionally). And (obviously!) I love music.
