I am now opening registration for an eight-week course of study of the art of close reading, the detailed analysis and study of the workings of poetry and prose. We will examine and interpret the texts of many authors, including John Donne, William Shakespeare, Gertrude Stein, William Carlos Williams, Ernest Hemingway, Flannery O'Connor, Walt Whitman, Franz Kafka, Vladimir Nabokov, Alexander Pushkin, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. The syllabus, with a prospective course outline, my expectations, and a more detailed description, is available here. Registration will be open for two weeks or so. All citizens are welcome to apply. Non-citizens are also welcome, subject to approval by the Regent.

If you need an extra author to read closely, I volunteer the two -- and "soon" to be three -- works of the "famous" trilogy of Talossan opera, The Berber of Seville and The Marriage of Cascourös (links to the English, not Talossan, libretti; I'm trying to be considerate to the needs of your students). Oh? Not the kind of stuff you're looking for? Sheesh. Oh well. Whatever. Hool

I'll add it to the syllabus - you're right, I shouldn't neglect our own literature. An oversight on my part!

Count me in on this. It's been just over ten years since I last studied close reading and would love to brush up (and pay better attention this time) on those skills.
Sidenote on the crappy Scottish education system: One of the last time I studied this was in final high school year Higher English...The teacher decided it was ok to study close reading with...Videos instead of books. We did Bruce Willis Armageddon shortly after Romeo and Juliet (and yes, we read the Shakespeare play then watched the Hollywood version with Leonardo di capri-sun. Sigh.

Only three students? That is unfortunate. Considering how at least one or two students drops out, I'm not sure we should actually have this class. Perhaps I should postpone it until more people are interested?

Let's post a deadline for interest to see if more than four apply before dropping the course altogether. How is March 9 (Friday)?

Very well, Regent. If I have at least five students before that date, I will go forward with the class. I would do it with three or four, but I expect at least a couple of drop-outs.

I would remind anyone interested in this class that the deadline for registration is tomorrow, otherwise the class may well be cancelled by Profeßeir Davis due to lack of interest.

And now we've reached March 10th without the minimum number of students. Unfortunate.

I will be happy to open registration again at a time of your choosing, Istefan. I'd very much like to teach the course - just not to an empty virtual classroom.

Perhaps a course in the summer would get more response (since some of us are also taking courses in other universities). I am very interested in participating when it is offered.
