It's not that the issue is to difficult to grasp; more accurately I think it is that there is a tendency to muddle pies. There are two clauses in the First Amendment that deal with religion. The first, (actually the second as it is written) or "free exercise" clause says that you are well, free to exercise religion as you see fit. The "establishment" clause says Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.
What is annoying is when unrelated issues are hijacked and brought on board to defend the separation of church and state in the name of the Constitution but really have nothing whatsoever to do with the establishment clause, the First Amendment or the Constitution. What is even more annoying is when said effort to make an imaginary point infringes on the free exercise of Christians, Muslims, Wiccans, Pagans etc...
Too many cases have been flat rejected because some party or the other tried to read into the Constitution issues or connections that were not there. It says what it says.
I did not understand the allusion between Italy and this issue. Don't get me wrong I have a small understanding of Catholicism and Italian history is not completely foreign to me, it is just that I am not clear how one can "destroy" anyone's ancient history. I also don't understand how what Italy has right now is so bad. I would gladly drop what I am doing right now to go appreciate some post dark neo age Italy. (Did I say that right?) I would rather enjoy the food, the wine, the history the Church hasn't managed to "destroy," watching a hottie American Olympian or two... sounds good to me. Anyone want to move to Italy with me? I was thinking a winter home outside of Rome or a summer home up north...
