We've been remarking on the fact that Jaune Sabre's elegant armorial design seems to violate our layering rule, which says basically that every charge has to be on the field or on another charge which is itself on the field. (Jaune Sabre's design has a canton, on which is a cross, on which is a cross fillet.)
I've been thinking some more about why that cross-laden canton looks right, but layering (on the other hand) usually looks wrong. I think it has to do with the fact that the cross and cross fillet are the same shape, basically, so the eye doesn't have to independently "decode" them. And, building on this insight — you'll all be proud of me — I've figured out how to blazon the design so that it doesn't violate the layer rule! To wit: Gules, a sabre bendwise sinister or, on a canton argent a cross fillet or within and conjoined to a cross voided sable.

I am at a silly place right now which does not allow me to see the graphics at the Website, so I may be mistaken here, but does Dean Bettinger's canton not simply contain a cross sable cotised or? Am I mistaken or is not a "cross cotised" a single (unlayered) charge?
